Twin Battlezones! ...or should they be?
« on: March 18, 2007, 09:07:38 pm »
So my boss decides he'd rather pay for two warehouse units instead of three, and decides to unload some cabs that we haven't had a lot of interest in.  Since I'm the only employee, I get first dibs on the free stuff.

The first acquisition is Battlezone.  Since we have two cabs, my boss tells me I can have one if I take both - sorta "Make the best one out of two" kind of thing - along with a box labeled "Battlezone joysticks", which had many Battlezone CP parts along with an unopened Wico 8-way joystick!

Got them home and discovered that one was mostly complete except for all it's boards, while the other had been "robbed" of a lot of little stuff, but had every board except the X-Y generator.

Only one had a monitor, although the monitor boards had been stolen, but I have so many G05 tubes and boards in the shop that I should be able to rebuild a couple and get them working.

I'm more concerned with the lack of boards.  I don't remember us working on a Battlezone in the shop in the last four years, so don't know whether my boss (the classic, lazy, scrounger-type) had stolen boards to repair another long before I got there.  So, I'm on a search for boards with a very low budget.  I've found a set on Eldorado games, but don't want to pay that much if I can help it (the wife would kill me).  Anyone know if the X-Y generator was used in other Atari games that might be more easily found?

Other concerns would be a missing foot piece on one cab, and potentially replacing the artwork on one cab, due to a gouge to the wood on one side.

But....

I don't need two Battlezones, and have toyed with the idea of converting one to a Red Baron.  Of course, that might be impossible enough that my decision would be made for me.

What do y'all think?

BTW...  I took some pics, and will get them up soon.

The Red Baron conversion will cost you a fortune. It is cheaper to buy a Red Baron than it is to do the conversion. I would just take both cabinets, put together the best one you can, sell the spare parts to cover what you are missing, and toss the empty cabinet up on ebay for a penny. Someone will take it off your hands.

As for your missing board, it is highly likely a request on the Rec.Games.Video.Arcade.Collecting newsgroup will find you one in no time. Battlezone is a common game and (IIRC) used the same monitor as Asteroids, which is much easier to restore. The problem with Battlezone is the joysticks, and it sounds like you have extras.
