My monitor went dark

What would cause a monitor to go dark??
I have had a good picture on this game so far, but today all of a sudden it just went very dark.
You can still see the game somewhat, mostly just the fact that there is motion.
I dont have a manufacturer or model # off the monitor yet, I will open the back up tomorrow.
This was at one time a capcom vs snk (although I think it was originally something else) monitor is a 25".

More information like a specific make AND model of the monitor. Right now it's just like saying, "my car stopped running---what's wrong with it?".

What Ken said.  It could be caps, or in some instances resistors will go.  U5000/K7400/K7500 come to mind on this.

O.K., I jumped the gun a little on this one.
From looking at the monitor id sites I believe this is a nanao ms8-26su

If it's a Nanao you're screwed cause it's gonna cost ya money to find out what to do. Forum member "Jomac" from Australia used to post here alot and he's THE expert with Nanao monitors. Unfortunately, he doesn't come here any more (not since May of '06) and he wrote a repair guide on these (called the Ultimate Monitor Guide) and is selling it through Star Tech Journal (www.startechjournal.com) at $50 a pop. It lists your model and has several fixes for it.

Keep in mind that Nanao bailed out of the arcade monitor business several years ago and closed all of their USA offices. Getting service manuals, schematics, and many custom parts for Nanaos is impossible in the USA. That being said, it's up to you to decide whether that $50 'repair guide' is worth it in addition to the cost of any parts and the labor involved to install those parts.

i have had a few nanao msn9 and ms8 show the same problem,try changing the 250v 10uf cap on the neck card first because 9 times outta 10 its gonna be that.
i have been working on a few nanao's this week and i am changing that cap as a matter of course.there seems to be some common faults on these chassis.
you will see another post here about a ms9 and they are very similar to the ms8,have a read of that

I will check those post out.
In the mean time the darndest thing happened.
I went out to rec room and sprayed the board with electronics cleaner (not that it was dirty) let it dry then turned the power on to the games and this game came on just fine.
I am wondering if it is a heat issue, I dont think the cleaner had anything to do with it.
When it went out yesterday it had been on for most of the day, when the monitor went dark I turned it off  for a couple of hours but it was still dark when I powered it back up later.

i thought that ms8 looked too clean,i don't use anything to clean monitors apart from compressed air and a brush.
the cap i refer to is a heat related problem,after years of operation the electrolitics become dry and unable to function correctly,sometimes after a few hours with voltage they sort of work.
i am convinced this is your problem and for a couple of pence and half hour of your time what have you got to lose.
