Win XP services, what I don't need??
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:30:31 pm »
I am going to install a fresh copy of XP tomorrow, what services can I turn off or what ones do I need?  This is going to be for MAME, some PC games and some other emulators.
I b**ch. People listen!!

See the nLited thread.   Tiny XP works well with Mame and Games and loads fast without unneeded services.  Already stripped down for you.

Or if you would prefer to LEARN!

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (Probably the most aggressive settings, but I would think most of that would be fine for a MAME cab)  (Glad to see him back).

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm (Less aggressive than BV, but I often prefer his recommendations, at least for a general usage PC - a MAME cab can get by with a lot less).

I printed the Black Viper guide, read what each one did and chose what to keep and dump. It was very helpful. My 2ghz powered cab goes from power on to front end in about 30 seconds. Nearly a minute off the original load time.
