Sony ssm-2010 convergence (pics)
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:53:18 am »
I bought a Sony ssm-2010 20" colour video monitor from a thrift shop the other day for $12.99. Online pricing has put it, somewhat amazingly as a $425 value !

Anyway....i built a VGA to Composite lead, from that Tomi Engdahl site that many mention. It uses various resistors between VGA outputs and you get a Composite/TV picture.
You use VGADOS or ARCMON for the software side of switching to 15Khz.

Built the lead, checked the resistors etc and powered up. The attached pic is the output.
There's absolutely no noise in the signal, the picture is crystal clear and Horiz/Vertical is stable, but, what the hell is with this colour shifting thing going on ?

Thing is, i rebuilt the lead and used different resistors and it's exactly the same. Also tried both programs and the output was similar.

I tried the convergence rings on the tube (safety precautions implemented) and little was achieved. The colour seperation stays pretty much the same.

When connected to a VCR i get wavy output looking like a mess of unsync'd lines, similar to trying to run a PC through a TV.

Connecting the PC to a TV produces a B&W image, slightly grainy, as described in the website i got the idea from..so that side checks out.

Has anyone any ideas about such a colour shift and how to fix it ?
Any components known to blow on Sony Trinitron's etc ?

Sony Trinitron are special monitors/tv sets unto themselves. You need to talk to someone who specializes in them.

Thanks for the reply Ken...and I wondered as much, due to their design.

Just tried the output to an Apple green screen 11" monitor and it's equal to the Sony, if not better !
(will post a pic a.s.a.p.)

I'm wondering if there's a way to give a green only display with monitors, hence hopefully working around the colour seperation problem.
Disconnecting red and blue inputs, from the PC lead to the Sony, gave exactly the same image. Which makes me wonder if red and blue guns aren't even getting a proper signal.

My camera doesn't do the image justice, but the output to the green only Apple screen is superb.
