It’s about time this got clarified for good…
« on: March 10, 2007, 06:01:56 pm »
I’m pretty new at this whole thing and here is my situation:
I am a MAC user for my home computer, and will buy a PC when I want one in my MAME cab. However I have Macmame and about 20 ROMs and there is a lot of compatability issues. First of all I want to know, is there problems with MacMAME, compared to ordinary MAME? If the answer is “Yes” then will I just be able to play all my games on MAME on my PC when I get it without these problems? If the answer is “No” then what exactly is going on here, and in a simple way can some hero explain how to get all my ROMS working? Do I just need a ton of different versions of MAME? (I was running two different versions on my MAC for a while and they both played different games.) Are there only a few games that work on each version of MAME? Why are there so many ROMs out there if they don’t work? If anyone can clear this up for me, much much thanks in advance.

I am a MAC user as well and I am running a windows pee cee for MAME.  The Win version of Mame doesn't have the same problems as the MACMAME version.  The reason is that MACMAME is not updated or supported nearly as well as Win MAME.  Hope that helps.
Cheers.

Right that's encouraging thanx. When i said PC i meant Windows. Now i would still like to learn a little more like the compatability, and which ROMs don't work (like if there is a general way to identify them.) As well as what the whole rom-set thing is and what it's supposed to do. Also should i still run many different versions of MAME, or is the latest version best? Why do people say version .32 is so good? Thanx a million.

You need to download romcenter or clrmamepro and they'll fix your roms.  There isn't any accurate way to determine broken games.  Listxml does report the driver status, but it's subjective.
