Verizon DSL suckin'
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:53:06 pm »
For about 48 hours now, my DSL download speed has been about 150 rather than the 700 to 1,300 it usually is.  I've done all the usual crap with turning off the modem, etc.

Google shows others having this same problem right now all over the U.S.

Any other Verizon victims here wanna chime in with their current experience?

Well, slight improvement now.  Who knows why.  Actually, my upload speed is currently MORE than my download speed!   :laugh2:

http://speedtest.net/

BTW, that's the neatest little site I've found for running speed tests.

No DSL here either. Cable modem is outrageously priced. Dial-up is too obsolete for the current internet. So what do I do? Leach off of neighbors wi-fi since they are to ignorant to secure their network. ;D

Hope you're running a personal firewall then... if you can get onto their network, they can get onto yours.

1. I am locked down
2. I don't do any personal stuff over wi-fi.
3. I know my neighbors and trust me, all they know about computers is you press the on button and click the innernets button.

I'm assuming by personal stuff you mean things with identity info... and since it would be foolish to work on someone else's connection... are you just gaming on theirs?  Browsing the web?  Just curious.

BTW, they don't have to be competent themselves... all they need to do is have a curious guest.  I was at my friend's house last year and noticed they had *3* unwanted IPs using their WiFi... and none of them had personal firewalls.  I only set up MAC filtering for them but I could easily have wiped those 3 machines if I wanted.

I guess not...my upload seems kinda messed up, but my dad is using the wi-fi right now, and that might have altered the results. I also have DynDNS and VNC running.

EDIT: Why do I have such a high ping? Can anyone help me with this?

Lol, no servers here atm :P
It's funny when I think about the first time I got this connection.... The speed back then was 2mbit down and my upload was 15kB/s ^^;
It's just normal cable :)

Btw, I've heard there are still a lot of people with internet via phone connection? what's up with that  :dizzy:
I don't know anyone here that still has it.

I suppose if your neighbors ever *really* piss you off.... after a few threats directed to the right places via their internet connection.... then you could watch all the black vans show up and dudes with automatic weapons surround their house.....  >:D   then again maybe that'd be a little overboard.....

I used to have the upgraded verizon package which included 1.5-3.0 mbps down and 768 kbps up. I was paying around 35.00 a month. I speed tested it (i use speakeasy.net) and it says I was like 1.2 mbps down and 290 kbps up, WTF. I called them and complained they said it was because I was to far from the main hub. I explained to them that I also tested 4 other homes within a 10 mile radius and they all came up at the same speed. I told her to take the cap off of me or I was going to cancel all of my services with verizon. The girl said she would send a tech out??? Well she never did and I cancelled. I now have cavalier telephone and DSL. Can you say 1.5 mbps down and 950 kbps up. I do a lot of sharing over torrents and the upload speed is great!!! So switch to cavalier and tell them I sent you and I will halve the finders fee with you :)

That happened twice while I was an admin at Northeastern... someone would walk away logged in and a second person would sit at their station to send a death threat to the President.  Secret Service swooped down on the building and locked the whole place down for a couple hours each time.  Scary.

Dang.... not the time I'd want to be admin.... even tho you're hardly responsible I'd guess they'd still ask you questions?

Not bad considering I am also running uTorrent in the background @ 5kps...

Different location...a little closer...still running a torrent in the background (at 5kps ...the slowest I can set it)...

Now with uTorrent set to UNLIMITED upload and download...DAMN!  (This is interesting)

Actually I'm kinda cheating.  I work at Speakeasy.net which owns Filecloud (where the Seattle test is run from).  I am running the test from the same network that the test runs from.

I was an assistant, basically someone with root that sat in labs and made sure people didn't run away with monitors.  So it wasn't me they were questioning.

Huh.  One of the two phones in the house was causing the problem.  One of the DSL filters has apparently died.  Disconnected the phones and now back to normal.

When the admins finally tracked it down to exactly which workstation and time it happened, the facilities guys were able to use some security cam footage to get a visual (just coincedentally there was a camera in that part of the building).  Both times it turned out to be the same Indian grad student... needless to say he lost his student visa and was sent home via trebuchet.
