One of the guys I work with has a much simpler preventative measure guarding his home at night.  He has a septic sprinkler system (waters the lawn with water from the septic tank) that turns on if any backyard motion sensors are tripped after midnight.

Sounds like it would stink your yard up something horrible.  There's a ridiculous amount of E Coli in your septic tank, too.  Ew.

Couldn't do that in places with any wildlife.  I know I'd have turkeys setting it off 2-3 nights a week in the summer.

Heh.  I've had to chase turkeys from my car to get in it too.  Sometimes they decide to be stubborn and won't leave.  My kids missed the school bus one morning last year because there were 15 turkeys standing there and we had to wait up the street - the driver saw the turkeys but not us.

what im getting at is not so much what happens to a presspasser (cos that would be GOLD!) but surely there are by-laws about septic waste disposal? it cant just be sprayed anywhere you want. thats what sewers are for...

Where do you think the sewer effluent turns up?

A few sub developments around here have their own sewage plants... and golf courses.

After  you settle out the solids, you let the liquid effluent sit around in ponds for a few days.  Bacteria, sunlight, et voila.

You sprinkle the now mostly clear water on the golf courses.  Once a month the honeydipper comes in and sucks off the sludge to use as landfill.

I've had to get several extra vaccinations to play with the stuff, but apparently its OK to sprinkle with.

Crap "tea" is the best fertilizer you can use.

We get duck crap from the zoo and split it out - half for compost/seeding/whatever and the other half is mixed in with water the day before to spray.  It's "organic" and whatnot

you guys are missing the point of modern sewerage treatment. it isnt just flushed into the sea, or a river. its treated comprehensively with chemicals and filters n stuff. a septic tank works by it sitting there for ages and then it leaches into the ground. if you just pump it straight out of the tank, you might as well just connect a hose straight from your crapper to this 'sprinkler' thing...

Danny, I work with it almost every day.

Depends on the system.  Sure, some use chemicals to treat, filter presses to dewater the sludge, etc, etc...  Most of what is see is purely biological.  Cheaper to run.

Most biological systems use little, if any chemicals.  The bugs do all the work.  Bacteria is your friend.

No filters.  No chemicals.  Just natures littlest helpers.  As for retention time in the holding ponds, I'd say less than a week.  Theres typically at least 2 ponds, one aerobic, one anaerobic.  The aerobic one has aerators, or a fountain.  Two different bugs, more effective treatment.

I watch ducks swimming in the ponds.  I also watch hunters shoot the ducks when they take off.  Yummy.

I can verify what Ed's saying about the holding ponds, and I think honestly, you'd be amazed at the setup and relative lack of chemicals.  Filtration, sure, but you don't want a straight deuce making it through on the first pass, you want it broken down by the process Ed's speaking of.

Thats the uber-large size of a machine that gets installed inline in the influent piping at a treatment plant.  Mainly, it just has to shred tampons, condoms, semi-solid waste, and small pets.  Thats their ad reel.  Sells itself, no?

Its fun to go to a treatment plant that doesn't have one of those... You can tell how many people got lucky the weekend before by the number of condoms floating on the surface of the scum.
