PSP worth it just for a portable MAME?
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:00:47 pm »
Given that I just put money in a DS Lite, which I do not regret at all, is it worth it to try and get a PSP for deeper emulation / better video?

Probably not the most prudent purchase for someone who has found himself in very uncertain waters job-wise and has a family to support . . .

Yeah.

Get a cheaper GP2X instead!  :P

But seriously, if you are in an uncertain financial position, make sure you don't have to live in a cardboard box before you focus on goodies.

Sage and sound advice ....my wife say "Thank you!" (though she know not I posted this here, I can hear her)!

Actually, I  had that one figured out...I suppose I meant for future / better times.   ;D  Don't want to give anyone the impression I'm a "selfish" father on here!  But again, I do appreciate the truth being spoken guys, thanks...this is why I turn to you all instead of others.

I'm not sure I'd suggest one for use just as a portable Mame machine.  When I last tried mame on my PSP (a few months now at least) it was alright, but not great.  Not worth the price of the system anyway.  I'm not sure how fleshed out the GP2X emulation is for Mame, but it is cheaper.

If you want to run more systems, and are interested in at least a few PSP games, I'd get a PSP.  NeoGeo/CPS1/CPS2 emulation is great on PSP, as is NES/SNES/Genesis... GBA is a strong emulator now.  Lots of homebrew games are out as well.

If you want to do all of that, and some video, and want a few PSP games, I'd say it might be worth it (disregarding your financial situation for a minute).  If you just want a portable Mame, I'm not so sure.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

I'd go for GP2X as well.  It's cheaper and made for emulation.
I've seen video's of it on youtube and MAME, Neo Geo and other emulators look great. :)

I definitely at some point in this life plan on owning a GP2X....and it's definitely ahead of a PSP right now....looks like it'll do all I want one to do in the way of emulation and that the emulation scene is strong for it.

as much as I love my PSP, if you're mainly looking for a good portable MAME solution, I'd look elsewhere.  I think the PSP is an EXCELLENT portable game system in its own right, has some great emulation and some pretty darn good games of its own, but it's MAME support is just so-so.

Other emulation is great though.....I secretly love playing Warioware on my PSP.... ;D

There arnt really that many mame games that run on the psp, but there are a hell of a lot of other emulators that run smoothly, and the video converting quality is fantastic. Of course, the psx emulation is fantastic as well!

I thought it sucked for MAME when I tried it a few months ago. The selection of games was very limited, and only the oldest of the old stuff ran right. Even Donkey Kong ran at the wrong speed.
The NES and Genesis emulators for it were excellent. The SNES was good, but many games ran slow, even with the PSP overclocked.

In the end, I realized I didn't have the need to play 15 year old games everywhere I went and now just use the PSP with current software.
