Any free file hosting sites that allow multi-gig files??
« on: February 27, 2007, 10:05:39 pm »
The title says it all.  Anybody know of a free hosting site that will host a 3+ gig file?  Is a torrent the only way to go with something like this??

 ???

I dunno, but you're probably better off breaking a file that large up into smaller segments.  100meg rars would be a good approach.

Why is that?  Just to get around the file size limitations or is there another reason??  I'm not expecting much from the people I'm hosting it for so I am trying to keep things as simple as possible (hence trying to avoid torrents).

Breaking it down into 100MB rar files would just be to get around the file size limitation. On a proper ftp server it doesn't add any other benefit. On a web server it also has the benefit that if you crash halfway through downloading you don't have to find out whether resume downloading works with the current setup, because if it doesn't you'll have to start all over again.

And just so we're clear "torrent" is a protocol for communication, not a file server. Just like "ftp", "http" and "smb" you will still need to find somewhere willing to host the first copy of the file anyway, in the same way that you still need a first copy of a book regardless if you send it in batches of 10 pages in normal envelopes or in a big box, or individual pages folded into origami, and so on.

What he said...sorry it was late when I posted that.  If its an ftp site that supports resumes (most do) then the rar files won't make it any "easier" than an http download.  However, if you did include a par2 repair set, then if there was an error during transfer, the par set could be used for repair.

Anywho, even if it just allows you to get around the file size limitation, breaking it up will help...
