Throwing my hat in the ring with an Assault replica (kinda)
« on: February 27, 2007, 09:18:54 pm »
I have built several cabs, but never had enough brains to take pictures of them. I have decided it is time to rebuild the first one I made. It was done with in haste and in the excitement of playing some arcade games, I cut some corners and it didn't turn out all that great (Didn't even put on t molding).

I have settled on remaking the old classic space tank game "Assault" cabinet, with some modifications of course....The original cab was 16 inches wide, mine will be 26" wide, the side dimensions will remain the same. Rather than two flight stick style controls, mine will feature a two player configuration with the standard 6 button setup, a 3" trackball, a lightgun, side flipper buttons and working plunger for a little Visual/Future Pinball action.

Parts are still coming in from across the globe, pictures coming soon!

Yeah, I am looking forward to really sink my teeth into this one.

I gotta throw a shout out to Jakobud for providing some most excellent cabinet plans. I used to love Assault. I don't remember it being only 16 inches wide, but then again....I was a lot thinner back then too  ;D

Just keeping my eyes peeled on the weather report for a nice day to cut. The previous owner of my house converted the garage into a bonus room....makes for an excellent space for a game room, but makes it hard to build them without an indoor space like a garage! Kind of a catch 22 there

I know what you mean, I do my cutting outside under the carport. I tend to cut in batches if the weather is crappy and we are only looking like we are gonna get one or two good days. That way I have cut way ahead of what I needed and can do some assembly inside if needed.

The monitor just shrunk from 27 to 19 inches. The 27 inch TV I was using wasn't cutting the mustard. It will end up in another project I am going to be starting soon using a Sega Dreamcast and Sega Saturn with hacked controlpads to arcade controls

I was planning on getting materials and start cutting today....but mother nature came by the neighborhood and dropped off some snow....

Oh well, maybe next week.

I don't quite catch the Assault connection. The cabinet doesn't look like Assault, there aren't any Assault controls and the monitor doesn't even have the same orientation.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Read man! The cabinet on the picture was the first he did, nothing to do with Assault.

Yeah...that one is being rebuilt into the likeness of Assault. Going to take it apart, canibalize the struts and whatever MDF I can save and then build an Assault cabinet.

The obligatory "Parts shot"......

Two MagStik Pluses, standard 6 button config with start and coin buttons. The two yellow buttons are going to be the pinball flipper buttons. A Minipac is going to run everything. And of course, the ACT Labs Light Gun. Computer is a AMD Athlon64 2400 with a gig DDR Ram, DVD ROM, ATI 9550. Not quite sure how I am going to mount those speakers...I took them apart the other day, and there is a lot of extra crap in there. Monitor is going to be a 21" computer monitor for now.

The trackball is a 2 1/4" trackball from Ultimarc, it's 3 inch replacement is due to arrive tuesday. Also due to arrive tuesday is the pinball shooter.

CPO

The top of the panel stops right after the "Designs" part, and then the "Coin" labels and "Save your Quarters" slogan is on the front of the control box.

Looks like the project is on hiatus.

We just found out we are going to have to move cause our landlord can't afford his 17,000 a month lifestyle so he is going to have to sell our house. What a ---meecrob---.....do I sound bitter? Oops...

Sounded like my old boss. Sorry I cant give you a raise. Even though he has a Porche, 2 BMWs, and a corvette payment a month. Go figure.

I notice you have the player 1 and 2 coin buttons near the bottom. Is that going to get annoying after a while rest your arms on them or is that just a label to state that is player 1 and Player 2's controls?

No, that part actually wraps around the panel and the coin buttons will be on the front of the contol box.

I am considering just making a working coin door and ordering a buttload of the MAME tokens
