De-casing a TV?
« on: February 26, 2007, 05:35:01 pm »
Has anybody here removed a TV from its case and mounted it in a cab? My cabinet has 25" in width where I'd mount my set, which makes it so I can't quite fit a 27" TV in there. I'm like 3/5" of an inch too narrow.

I'm considering getting a 27" and just de-casing it. I just wonder if I'm going to get myself into trouble that I'm not prepared to deal with.

I haven't done it, but I am positive a few people here have.  A search might turn something up as I know I saw it in a project thread awhile ago

I de-cased a PC monitor...same concept.  The biggest issue you will encounter is how to mount the chassis.  In many TVs/PC Monitors,  the chassis is attached to the plastic casing,  when you destroy that,  you will have to come up with a place to mount the chassis close enough to the tube so that everything reaches.

I was luck enough to find a monitor with a METAL BOTTOM.  When I pulled the case off it,  the seperate metal bottom is where the chassis was attached to...I then attached the metal bottom to the mounting bracket I used for the PC monitor tube (which I took off an Electrohome G07 13" frame).

I first attempted to fit a 17" monitor in the cocktail I had,  but failed miserably (just a hair too big)...which was probably a blessing as the chassis WAS attached to the plastic case and when I pulled it off,  I would have had to devise a way to attach the chassis to SOMETHING and yet still be close enough for everything to reach.  When I decased the 15" PC monitor I had (that fits nicely),  I lucked out with the metal bottom part.

All safety precautions apply to PC Monitors and TV's as they do arcade monitors.  Either avoid the anode or discharge.

PS:  anyone want a 17" PC monitor chassis and tube decased?

Yeah, I installed a decased TV  in my Galaxian as monitor. I saw the bottom off the case and screwed that with 2 screws to the wood mount so that the PCB is still held in the original "slides". Alternatively, you could use the regular PCB feet but it's a lot of hassle.

Check out my Galaxian thread about the decased TV:

i decased my TV to fit in  my cab, mostly for economic reasons... i was retro fitting an old broken down "Vs. Dr Mario" cab with SEVEAR screen burn in... all that would fit was a 21" TV, i didn't have a 21" TV but i did have a 26" TV. so i deceased it and mounted it vertically! it actually came out quite well.

i didn't bother with any of the plastic parts from the old TV case, save two... the picture tube was held in my these metal L shaped thingies (yes that IS the scientific term)... and the old plastic bezel off the tube, removed from the rest of the case with a jig saw!

i rigged up a mounting system with some metal self supports from home depot and thoes little metal L thingies... i don't have any pictures right now, but I'll dig out my Cd's and upload them so you can see what i did. in the end i just grabbed the electronics from the inside and staple gunned them to the wall of the cab (latter replaced with screws)

the whole frakenstiened system cost me about $10 in parts from home depot and ended up being strong enough for me to hang off (200#)

Just shove it in there man... it will fit... ;D

I actually did decase to make some relief cuts in the plastic TV housing... then put the case back on, and shoved the whole TV in my Midway cabinet... a little tight, but it works... maybe it will work for you...

When I finally DO get a TV that satisfies my needs I'm considering decasing it, but I keep reading about how certain parts are amped enough to kil even when unplugged, and I'm not sure I would trust myself to not touch the wrong part by accident..

If size were an issue, I could just cut the sides of the case off or something weird like that...right?

I mean if it came down to it and I HAD to I would, but unless I'm working with an arcade monitor I wouldn't want to..

New TVs are cake to uncase. They have teeny PCBs inside. Just read up on discharging and go to town.

Decasing a computer monitor (which I have also done many times) is a lot harder, as they have much bigger boards and often have interior cables with no extra length to them.

Oddly enough, some of you guys are decasing TVs to make them look like arcade monitors when I actually own a Wells Gardner D9200 that has been installed into a modern TV casing!!
