For those of you complaining that there aren't any lengthy games on the wii right now, this might be your solution.

I'm probably gonna pick it up later this weekend so I'll keep you guys posted as to if it sucks or not.

Reviewers seem to like it (a first in a long time for a Sonic game).  I think it's getting solid 8's.  For my part, I can't get excited about Sonic games as I've always hated them, including the original Genesis games that are supposedly great.

The original sega Sonic games were teh aw3some, but the latest ones have been pretty lackluster.  I'll be interested in seeing how this one on the Wii comes out....

Actually I'm not a big fan of the genesis sonics either.  I mean they are solid platformers, until you compare them to any platformer nintendo has ever released in their entire history. ;)  Mario sets the bar too high.  The smb games are so good that it's fun just to jump around a level.  I mean literally just moving around is so responsive it's enjoyable just to explore.  Sonic on the other hand, was like trying to steer a bullet.... very fast and very fun, until you hit a wall and then you have to back-track 30 feet and "reload".

I've actually been a fan of the later 3d Sonics.   Yes the speed was slower but that's a good thing when the controls are that bad.  Camera angles were horrible, that's what turned most people off from the later sonics.  Those issues are supposedly fixed in this game though, so it should be pretty good.

So I finally managed to snag a copy of the game.

I haven't played a lot so far, but all-in-all I rather like it.

The game plays very much like the genesis sonics, which some of you will love and others (like myself)  will get annoyed with.  It's very fast with a lot of jumps and quick turning and just like the old games, if you happen to miss that jump, you might have to back-track to pick up speed.

The controls are quite good, except for the fact that you tilt the wiimote backwards to go back and when you run backwards you literally run backwards, as in moon-walk it.  It's kinda lame and you can tell it was put in as a stop-gap in case you miss a goal.  Attacking enamies and making jumps is real easy though.... grinding and jumping have also been simpliefed to fix some of the issues in older 3d sonics.

Sonic has a story this time!  Yeah a real story, not like those "defeat eggman, save the girl" cop-outs you usally get.  This adds a bit of depth that is generally missing from sonic games.  With that being said, they ....ahem.... "borrowed" a lot of characters.  Your genie looks an awful lot like the girl in windwaker and the main villian looks like Gannondorf with an elvis hiarcut.  The plot and setting sure seem to remind me of prince of persia.  It still works, just don't expect any great plot twists or anything.

If I were to score it I'd give it a 4 out of 5.  It's a sega game, and thus by default they screwed some stuff up, but it's the first "real" game on the wii since zelda and it has enough depth to keep us occupied until something better comes out.  Oh it's fun too... not something I've been drooling over, waiting for it to come out, but it's a pleasant suprise.

You dare insult the creators of the Dreamcast?

Back on topic, I loved the old genesis sonics and will probably be picking this up. Thanks for the review.

Does it still feel like your "steering" him rather than controlling his movements, like in the 360 demo?

I hope it feels NOTHING like the 360 game.  Nothing... nothing at all.   God that game was atrocious. What a disaster.

It feels like you are steering him in that you are constantly in motion (like a car) but you can stop with the break button and unlike the 360 schlock the controls are very responsive.  The only time you'll get annoyed by this layout is when you have to stop to repeatedly trash on some enemy.  If it's an enemy that requires you to stop in-between attacks you'll hit him.... back up, hold on the break, get ready to jump again, jump.... repeat.

This seldom ever happens though, usually it's just a run right through.

I just got the game today myself - having a heck of a time mastering some of the new moves...think I'm holding the jump button too long on the attack move or something.  I felt like I'd had an arm workout and haven't even left the tutorial (lord knows I'm slow though).

That's your problem... you don't hold the jump button to attack at all, at least not while your attacking.  You crouch until a green crosshair appears on an enemy and then you let go to jump....  when it turns red you quickly thrust the entire wiimote forward.  It couldn't be easier, but the way the instructions describe it you might think that you turn/roll the wiimote forward, you don't you thrust it forward, like a straight punch.

For reasons I'll never understand, the instructions DID mess me up. I was thinking it said jump then attack on green and it turned red as you actually hit them.

When I went back and played it again today, I realized my error - and did as Howard described above.  It was just a few minutes until I had that training level beaten....and before I knew it I was through the initial 8 levels of training and racing (and I do mean RACING) across the hot burning sand to the King's castle.....and so, Sonic's quest (and mine) finally began today....
