New High Score In Galaga
« on: February 21, 2007, 01:55:19 am »
Woot...I just got my best score in Galaga ever.  227,500... probably isn't squat to some of your high scores out there,  but it's not bad.  Level 26.   The funny thing is that I have been playing my stand up vertical cabinet for months and I pulled this high score on the 3rd game of Galaga I  played on my cocktail (PC Monitor).

I also noticed that the cocktail seems to run MAME about 5-10% faster.   It is most noticeable with Donkey Kong.   I think I need to look at my settings.

Here are some of my other High Scores to date:

Donkey Kong 105,000 (approximately)
Gyruss 260,000 (approximately)
Time Pilot 280,000 (approximately)

How about posting some of your (approximate or actual) high scores...i'd like to compare my skills to those of some of you masters out there.

Galaga - 450,000 (on the fast shoot version - I can play forever)
Mario Bros - 330,000
Donkey Kong - 90,000 (I can't pass the 3rd elevator level!)
Defender - 70,000 (I love this game, just not very good)

Lew,  tell me about that damn 3rd elevator level.   I have managed to time it right ONCE,  hence my 100,000+ score...ONCE.   All my other scores are bunched up at 89,000-93,000 or so because I make it to that damn level and get my arce handed to me!

EDIT: Great Galaga score BTW...but do you mean the 450,000 was had with the fast version or your score on the standard version is 450,000 but you can play forever with the fast version?

Which clone is the fast version BTW?

...and have you tried the NAMCO COLLECTIONS version of Galaga?  Some seem to hate it,  i though it was pretty nifty.

That's what I usually play, on the GC.  I don't have a MAME cab.  The game itself is pretty damn accurate but the console controller just doesn't cut it for really high scores.  I usually top out around 125-130,000.

I got a galaga score of 178,000 on the plug'n'play wireless Ms. Pacman unit. I am fairly proud of that one considering the controls suck.

Still a fairly real stick, though.  On the GC you have to use the analog stick (which is like a hugely sloppy tiny arcade stick) or the D pad that is badly positioned and stiff.

I can't stand the GC controller. What the hell was Nintendo smoking when they came up with that?

I've been playing Galaga on XBLA (for the Gamerscore points).  I'm not ver good.  Only abot 87k, so far.  The player at the top of the leaderboard has over 4 million.  :dizzy:

My best score with the standard Galaga is around 450,000. The trick is to ditch the double ships after you lose them and play with a single ship. I can sometimes get to wave 15-17 with double ships. Once you lose the double ship - stay with just 1 ship.

If I find a fast shoot version of Galaga (many of the $1 Ms Pac/Galaga Class of 1981 machines) I can play that until I feel like quitting. Takes me about 1.5 hours to get around 800k on one of those. Not sure what the machine will do at the million mark for player 1.

I'll have to try that.  I always try to get double ships whenever possible.

I was thinking about that the last time I played, trying to decide if I was wasting ships at some point by going with double between stages 10-15 and losing them faster than I would singles.

FrizzleFries, do you have different kind of buttons on each machine?

Also, what is your frame rate? Shouldn't be a speed difference if you're keeping it locked to the actual frame rate it should be playing at.
NO MORE!!

Nope...same Happ buttons...same TornedoTerry custom ball top joys... both rigs are running on AMD XP processors...the stand up is on an XP2100+ with an ArcadeVGA,  the cocktail is on an XP1800+ with a 9700PRO.

I am guessing I have a setting wrong in MAME.   I am 100% sure there is a SLIGHT speed increase...I am guessin g 5-10% at most....not TOO noticeable in Galaga or Gyruss,  but surely noticeable in DK...ESPECIALLY the elevator level.

Do you have the same mame version on both machines?  I was running an old version until someone else here told me that on the version I had been using robotron runs faster than the real thing.  Maybe DK has a speed problem on some versions of mame also.

It's probably too close to that nuclear reactor of a computer your using in the garage.

Hahaha...actually,  the nuke reactor is in my HORIZONTAL cabinet...and as we all know,  DK, Gyruss, and the like are VERTICALLY oriented games...

My Galaga high score is around 670,000, using 4 lives, bonus at 20,000 and every 60,000...
