arcade and related jobs?
« on: April 06, 2003, 06:29:42 pm »
Well, I'm thinking of getting a new job for the summer and also I'm starting to look at my options for when I move to Chicago next school year and I was thinking it would be a good experience for me to get to work with arcade machines.  Building my MAME cabinet was one of the most  rewarding projects (if not, the most rewarding project) I've ever taken on, and I'd really like to learn more about arcades and arcade machines.  I was wondering if any of you who have worked for dealers or arcades could shed some light on my situation.  There probably isn't much here in the Akron, Ohio area, but I'm hoping that opportunities will open up when I move to Chicago, as this appears to be quite a center for arcade-related activity.

Game programmers do not play games for a living.  Would you say a mechanic drives cars for a living?

Well, I am out in the burbs close to the city; there are a few GIANT arcades like Gameworks ect. (I don't know if they have them by you) For the most part, all there is are operated games in restaurants ect.

There is this one cool arcade by me called Nickel City, it is REALLY worth a visit! They charge 2$ for admission and have a ton of nickel (and some free I believe) games from the mid to late 80's (some new ones)

Also some Dave and Busters.

For the most part, Chicago is alot like most other citys arcade wise.

PS: Are you going to college here? Which one?

Yes, I'm going to the Illinois Institute of Technology.  I am going to be finishing my Computer Science degree there.  Right now I'm going to The University of Akron under the post-secondary enrollment option.  Akron's got a good program, but the students are lazy and it hasn't got a good effect on my attitude towards school.  ;)

My brother is at the University of Chicago; everything is really high strung. Someone jumped off of the top of his dorm recently.

Good luck with that stuff. Who knows maybe I will see you at Dave and Busters or Gameworks?

Woah, that's rough!  I don't think I'll be killing myself over school or anything else for that matter!  One of the biggest reasons I want to get such a job is that I want to learn how to handle JAMMA and JAMMA+ stuff.  I know there's lots of stuff on the internet, but nothing can really help you if you've got nothing to physically work with.

I worked for nickel city and that was owned by Capcom. Although I had to normal day to day operations I did learn a lot from the tech. And I believe they have several arcades in Chigaco... check out the capcom site.

I had a feeling someone would say something like that.  I know arcades aren't cool any more, but I think maybe that's part of my fascination with them.  I am generally attracted to unconventional things.

where's nickle city in the chi?

there are a few smaller arcades around as well, but from my experience unless you can befriend and owner or op, they mostly (if at all) do their own repairs/upkeep, but so far every arcade i have been to had a real lack of maintenance, very frusterating (sp?)

good luck, and drop a line when your in town, and othe chicago mame-sters drop me a line too, we should hook up for some vidfun!

You move to new york and I hook you up with a job at an arcade fixing warehouse.. :DI worked there last summer(it was fun). They dont pay you much though..only like $10 hours(newer people) and experienced folks that knows everything about arcades gets like $15 an hour...
best bet is yellow page...I know arcades are fading away now a days  :'( but I think you can still find jobs at arcades.. :)

BTW,it really cost only a nickel to play at nickel city(per game)  ???
How would they make any money if its like that.. ???

Yeah, they really only do charge only a nickel. They have mostly 80's games.
