Youtube on a 400mhz?
« on: February 18, 2007, 12:58:59 pm »
Is it possible to watch Youtube videos without lag on a 400mhz laptop? I've had Xp and Xubuntu installed and it lags on both. Is it Firefox's fault?

400MHz?  No, it's not FireFox's fault!

yes, it is possible. you just have to pause the video and wait for it to download fully before playing. i used to do this on a p233mmx/64mb ram on win2kpro. no other tasks on except the browser.

You can wait for the buffer, thats the easy answer, or you can install another operating system that is less intensive, ie tinyxp or freebsd, and run it through that.  This is ofcourse if you can get tinyxp to recognize your NIC - which is the problem I am currently having...

Xubuntu is made for running on low-end systems, though. And I really don't want to install another OS (at least not right away; impulsively) because it took me a very long time to get this wireless card to work.

Is there a less intensive browser I could try? It would have to support javascript and flash though, too (so a browser like Dillo would not work).

Ive had xubuntu lag up on me even on good systems, never really was a fan of the ubuntu distros, we just dont get along.

Give offbyone a go on your xp install:
http://offbyone.com/offbyone/
it works better than Firefox on my lowend machines.  Another suggestion is k-meleon: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
I am just not a big fan of it.

And ofcourse you can try Opera, if you can deal with the ads that is.

NIC? Is that your wireless card?

Also, would DSL be a good OS? It has very small system requirements, and I'm kinda opposed to TinyXP due to its questionable legality.

sounds stupid but have you tried it under IE ?

I only ask because I am using a 400mhz tablet pc with XP and IE and have no problems viewing youtube videos (or winamp videos etc)
the only thing it wont handle is full screen video

No, I can't, I'm running on Linux silly.  ;D I would love to see the day when MS ports IE to Linux.

I would try TinyXP but I'm so afraid of it not working. Then I'm back to square one in Xubuntu with my wireless card.

NIC means Network Intereface Card

DSL is alright, and for what you are doing it could possibly be your answer.  I have no beef with using tinyxp because Ive given microsoft enough money this generation.

NIC means Network Intereface Card

Which is...?

Is it your wireless card? Or your ethernet thingy?

Sorry, things recently have not be congruent with pc usage.

But yes in your case your NIC would be your wireless card.  Any device that interfaces you with a network would be your NIC.  Be it 10/100/1000, 802.11a/b/g/n, 56k, or even bluetooth.
