Can you use something else besides this $100 Microsoft adapter?
Like a Belkin $39 adapter instead?

Its my understanding that any wireless bridge will work fine. They say, while pricey, the Microsoft one really does work well however. I dont use one personally, but thats what I have read.

I guess you can set up a couple wireless routers to do it too through the Ethernet port.

I don't think after looking through forums that any USB wireless adapter will work, unless it's the stock MS.
When you talk about a "bridge" you are talking about another router. One that has a direct ethernet hookup and then uses the wireless to connect to another router?

Dat's it. I can get a Belkin at Wally World for $39. Cord comes with it.

xbox.com's 360 support site has a list of compatible bridges.
A bridge makes an ethernet port into a wireless device. You can do the same thing with most wireless routers by putting them into bridge mode.
The microsoft adaptor is a dual band adaptor, that's partly why it is so expensive. It supports 802.11a/b/g
