I don't know how good this is, but if it works it's pretty awesome.

It does according to the review. Flawless SNES, a few sound issues with NES.

Seems really cool, if you own the original games and don't want to worry about the original system getting damaged.

I dunno... it's really big.  I mean they can put a nes on a chip these days, I really don't see having a super famicom-shaped device in my house when I can just whip out the snes.  (That of course is assuming that the nes side doesn't work well as the review says.)

I think there are some plug-n-play games that are snes on a chip now (mortal kombat?).  Somebody needs to get on hacking a port into one of those.  Or alerting the Chineese, they'll have a working product in a week.  ;)

One thing I noticed is that the unit has only SNES controller ports.  This would mean your Zapper wouldn't work without an adapter (if they make one, that is).

Also, if you're patient, they seem to be cheaper on ebay (edit:  they *were* cheaper a few days ago.  word has gotten out, I guess).

i would like one these not for the nes but for snes.  Its about the same as one on ebay but can double as nes and snes.

ill have to look into this.

They have never put a true 100% NES on a chip.  The NES on a chip you see on the market are all a Famicom-on-a-chip logic level emulators that don't run perfectly and in fact won't run some games at all.

Personally, I'd only be interested in it if it corrects the NES connector issues... I have several NES and SNES already and was never that big an SNES guy to begin with.

This is absolutely true, but you are forgetting the fact that this isn't a 100% true nes either, even from the review it already has problems.  The fact of the matter is if you were to crack the thing open, what you would find is that same nes on a chip tech, slapped onto a generic snes, also of questionable quality.  My point was you don't buy "brand new" 15 year old tech that's inferior unless it has a distinct advantage, like taking up a lot less space.

Eh, functionality is more important than space.  If it doesn't do what the original hardware does as well as the original hardware than leave it in the store.

Well, it certainly does take up a lot less space than a NES and Super NES combined.  And I think the advantage for most people is that they either don't have a NES and/or a SNES, or the NES they have is virtually worthless because the connectors are so bad.  If this will play NES games without having to blow in them and readjust them fifty times while repeatedly pressing the reset button, it presents a pretty good value, especially considering it's really incredibly low price.

As to functionality, there may be some tradeoffs.  Maybe it doesn't support NES light gun games, but if it supports actually working, instead of just blinking on/off, then maybe it does something a little better than the original NES.

Are you throwing money out your window on a regular basis or something?  With shipping it'll be 50 bucks!!!!  That's incredibly expensive period.  I can go buy a gamecube, ps2 or xbox for 100 and they are only 5 years old, not 15-20.  Not to mention that you can use any of those systems to play emulators for the nes/snes.  Heck you can get a gba for next to nill and it emulates the nes/snes fairly well.

Think about it this way.  There are no old age issues with the snes so you can pick on up for a little bit of nothing (read less than 30 bucks) on ebay or some such site.  You can buy a nes on a chip with the built in famicon/nes port for about the same.  So for the price of this double unit you can get an official nintendo product plus a el cheap-o device for playing nes carts.

$30 is a little bit of nothing but $50 is incredibly expensive?

FWIW, my posts in this thread are from my own point of view.  I don't particularly care if people out there who don't have an NES or an SNES want something.

I won't buy this.  I have a modded Xbox.  But not everyone is savvy enough to mod a system in order to use emulators.  Or maybe a lot of people want to play with original controllers.  Or maybe people have ethical issues with running pirated software.  I don't know.

What I do know, is that suggesting that $50 for this hardware is incredibly expensive is absolute lunacy.  It may be a lot of money to someone who already owns a SNES or to someone who doesn't mind pirating, but you're just trying to be difficult now.  $50 is a song.  It's the price of a single game (less than many games, in fact).

I haven't had a ton of luck with emulators on the Xbox yet.  The version of MAME I installed takes 2-4 minutes to load a rom and the PCE and GBA emulators I installed don't display properly at all.  So far the only reasonably usable emulator I've found is Z26.

Now granted I haven't tried all that hard... I installed them, started them up, and that's it.

It's very possible that that NES/ SNES compatible system is sharing hardware in terms of components.   One of the original plans for SNES was NES compatibility, but nintendo dropped it due to cost.   The SNES uses a 65C816 processor.   The NES used a N2A03, a dervivative of 6502.  65C816 is backward compatible to 6502 and 65C02 (if you look, the Apple IIgs used it as well and could run all II, II+, IIe, IIc and IIc Plus software and the eariler Apple IIs were 6502 and 65C02).     I think the NES used a DAC for most of its sound, as well as a nintendo custom chip, which would have been easy to drive from the 65C816 chip.

It's not, though.  They didn't rearchitect the consoles.  They just put them both on one board.

Mame: 2-4 minutes? which game were you trying to load? It is a 733mhz processor with 128 megs of ram. A lot of the newer more robust arcade games might take a while to load (or maybe not load at all) But Just about every game that I want to play in Mame, I do so on my Xbox. And just a guess, but I would say about 90% of games supported by mame work fine on the xbox.

Saying that PCE and GBA don't display properly is being a bit harsh. There a tons of display options available in these emulators. If you don't like the way it looks, change it.

Since this thread is about NES and SNES, I can say that I have played MANY hours of both on my Xbox and they look, play, and sound great. I also own a(n) SNES and a(n) NES, but they are collecting dust.

My Xbox is also collecting dust, but that is because I am too lazy to clean it off.

It's not harsh.  It is completely unplayable, a bunch of wavy lines on the screen, nothing at all useful in any way.

I beg to differ, xbox emulators are for the most part rock solid.  You just have to make sure that you get the correct ones.  MAME doesn't take 2-3 minutes to load, mine takes less then 30 seconds.   NES, is almost instant, as is n64, snes, genises, ect.
