Mame and Mamewah freezing on loading

Mame 61, mamewah V1.62b13, win98SE, NVIDIA GEforce MX 4000 (PCI). I am getting the puter up and running before cab install. I compiled Mame and it worked then loaded MAMEWAH and it will come up but ignores any keystroke. Can't get an options list and can't ESC. TASK Manager shows MAMEWAH "Not Responding". Have to reboot. Messed around and now MAME will only bring up black screen and hourglass of death. I am stuck there. Even CTL-ALT-DEL has no effect so reboot. I am thinking of recompiling mame and starting over. I did install the system.zip from mamewah downloads. and have installed DX9. Any help would be appreciated.
