Routing recess for trackball mount
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:50:45 am »
Hey all,
Firstly apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere, I've searched the forum but can't find anything.

I want to use my router to recess the trackball mounting plate into the control panel. Problem is I'm not sure how to do this. I bought a router for this project, used a slot cutter to cut the T-molding grooves and haven't used it since - so don't really know much about it. All the bits I have seen for routers are appropriate for cutting narrow grooves - so what is the best way to go about cutting a 6" square recess?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Make a jig.  Then you can use a template bit to recess the mount.  You make the jig just like you would to recess a joystick.

I used the principals of Timoe's tutorial at...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=51235.0

Here is a picture of my control panel with the "jig" attached...

(I should have used wider scraps on the left and right sides of the "jig")

Thanks Gents. Given my non-existent woodworking skills it would have taken me until hell froze over to work that out for myself.

Cheers!
