midway games-why so slow?

Why do Midway games run so slowly on MAME?  Do they really require that much extra power, or are they just not emulated well yet?

Due to better sound emulation, the Midway games slowed down recently.  Basically, some speed hacks that caused sound bugs were removed from the sound parts of the drivers(s).  This increased the minimum speed needed for 60/60 fps from ~1 Ghz to ~1.5 Ghz, IIRC.
