Odds are that's an extremely unattractive or heavy (or both) woman with terrible self esteem.  Odds are just as good that dude does or will eventually abuse her.  That couple should have their pictures next to the "woman considers herself extremely lucky to have anyone at all and settles for abusive, startlingly self centered husband" in the domestic abuse handbook.  I feel bad for that poor woman.

I'm as big a football fan as there can be... hell I often walk with a slight limp because of it.  But this isn't healthy.  The game as "once in a lifetime experience" over the birth of their (hopefully only) child?

Guess you missed the very last line of the article: "Mark is the couple's second son."

Also the fact that she's a teacher, all of whom are ugly!  ;D

Yep, must have missed that.  Poor kids/woman.  Give the tickets away and sit in the hospital room with your wife and new baby.  No football game is worth missing that.

I don't see the big deal.  Had she delivered two weeks earlier than she did the baby would have been considered full-term.  It's not like she opted to deliver prematurely so he wouldn't miss the game.

I think it's perfectly understandable and reasonable.  She was due to go into labor on Monday, but it's not like the fetus was aware of the scheduled date.  It's an NFC championship game.  She didn't want her husband to stay home just in case the baby came exactly on its due date[/i] only to find that she didn't go into labor afterall and he skipped the NFC championship game for nothing.  Inducing was a good option, IMO.

Inducing is only done when necessary for a reason.  It increases several medical risks for the mother - avoidable, unnecessary risks to an already very traumatic physical event.  Inducing for convenience is tremendously self centered and very telling about the character of those involved.

Dude shouldn't have gone to the game the next day, either.  Spend that day with your wife and new child.  If he's THAT broken up over it, watch the damn game on TV from the hospital room.

Bingo.  Last time I checked, most hospital rooms have a TV.

My wife cannot be induced - it could cause her and the baby to die. It is usually only recommended to induce when a baby is overdue because the placenta starts to shut down. Of course, people can do what they want - just like people who schedule c-sections because it is convenient.

Induction has a risk of causing uterin rupture. This pretty much guarantees at least permanent brain damage, if not death for the child. The woman has to undergo an immediate historectomy at the least.

Of course, for a woman who has no complications in pregnancy, the risk is not too high - like 1%. That is still risk though.

Anyways, the point is the guy places a frikkin football game as a higher priority than the birth of his child.  If any of you know my story, then you would understand why this so thoroughly pisses me off. I am glad some of you understand.

Hmm . . . my position is reversed somewhat.  I was unaware of some of the risks involved with induction, but from the little bit I've read since jumping on Google to show Chad what a stubborn jackass he is, I've learned that it does appear that women who induce shortly before their due date (who had uncomplicated pregnancies) have more forcep and vacuum deliveries as well as C-sections due to fetal distress compared with women who wait for labor to begin naturally (who also had uncomplicated pregnancies).  Electively induced babies also have a greater rate of being admitted to intensive care following birth (again studies of women who had uncomplicated pregnancies).

So maybe it was a bad decision.  However, I don't think the husband is necessarily a jackass.  His wife might have insisted on it, and their doctor may have understated the risks.  Many doctors flatly refuse to do elective induction, so the fact that their doctor even presented it as an option suggests that they may have had every reason to believe that it was perfectly safe.

My personal opinion is that anybody who puts football before ANYTHING has their priorities wrong.  People seem to think it's some sort of event and that they are a part of it or something.  It is a televison program.  Your home team has no real relevance to your hometown because they draft players from all over the country, leaving most teams with 2 or fewer players that are actully from that town.

To think that somebody would be more excited over attending the broadcast of some stupid television program over the birth of their child disgusts me. Seriously words can't describe how that makes me feel. This guy must be a real gem.  Bet he cheats on his wife and beats the kid.  Arm chair quarterbacks desperately trying to reclaim the 15 minutes of glory when the scored the winning goal on their high school football team tend to do that.

Admittedly, I just skimmed the article, but all I got was that they guy had tickets to the game and so his wife induced three days early.  Did the article indicate that he was not excited about the birth of his child?  Couldn't he have been excited about both events?  I guess I assumed that they induced so that he wouldn't miss the football game, not so that he wouldn't miss the birth of his child.

Again, I don't think induction was the right choice, and the doctor should not have done it.  But are you guys sure that you aren't inventing areas of the story to make it seem worse than it is?

Actually, I reduced it:

1)  She induced early so he could attend an entertainment event.
2)  She increased her risk of several dangerous aspects of child labor, many of them with portentially permanent consequences to both her and the child.
3)  He participated in the decision making.

She is wrong, very wrong, but he is far far worse in this scenario.

This is no different from people who induce before the end of the year for the tax break (as limited as it now is). To make the leap from "over the top football fanatic" to "wife and child beater" is a pretty long stretch given the information we have based on that article.

Your starting point isn't the same as mine.  I started with "willing to risk the safety of wife and children to avoid missing entertainment event".  That moves it from "over the top football fan" to "negligent parent and husband".  The leap is much smaller from there and in my book only puts him slightly further than "man who drives drunk with wife and kids in car".

I have too much experience with the other side of that equation... my father used to do crap like drink while driving with us in the car and thought it was clever.
