Hate most new games that are Coming Soon?
« on: January 19, 2007, 05:34:07 pm »
Hi ya,
I dont post much but lurk around a lot.  I hear that the average age of Gamers is 30, and I would like to believe it.
However, Ive noticed a trend in my gaming preference that seems to be different than that of most modern games.  I come here looking to see if anyone else is in the same boat as me.

Ok, first thing first...
I truly Hate and despise First Person Shooters (FPS.)  Other than the allure of playing with your friends, I dont see the appeal of them.  Ive tried them, had some fun killing some friends in some, but after everyone leaves the game for RL stuff (kids, jobs, wife, etc) Im looking for something fun to play.

I like 2d side scroll platformers!  Mario, Sonic, Metroid (Super Metroid! /drool) I like and can play these games alot, but they are frankly old, and I dont see anything like them coming out.  These games were made on old technology and the graphics reflect that.  With modern consoles/PCs we should be able to push Gorgeous sprites/textures etc and make some innovative games.  However I dont see ANYONE developing games of old anymore.  Well that is not exactly true, Ive seen a couple good looking games on the NintendoDS (dont own one yet,) is all my hope for new Good games dwindle down to a handheld system?

hmm.. what else... Oh!
I like RPGs... but... i wana play my RPGs not watch them...  I remember back in the day playing FF for the Nes and loving it, but hating how hard it was, I spent a lot of time getting my chars what they needed and exploring the land, and when I finally overcomed that dungeon/boss what a trill it was....  Fast Forward to Now... FF12, now while gorgeous and some very deep storyline.... I keep falling asleep during the game...  everytime I turn around Im watching the story unfold other than playing it...  Same for other Final Fantasys on the PS2.   Ok, nother RPG, Oblivion, this game even won like umpteen million online game websites awards its not funny.  This game lets you customize you char/class and really let loose in a virtual world (yea!) its all done in a FPS interface (boo!)  Even tho this is a RPG its made to play/resemble like a FPS? If i wanted to play a FPS i would play a FPS...

MMOs... Ive tried them. Ive loved them. Ive hated them... I want my life back... Next ....

Ive thought about getting a Next Gen console but all i see are FPS, FPS, FPS....

Is there anyone out there with similar tastes as me?  Am I forced to play old games forever?  Is there no one out there making games new platformers? Is the future all FPS?

Anyone got any Ideas, Suggestions or Comments?

Later!

I agree. 2D side scrolling platformers are the best! They still come out with some for the GBA, so I guess you're right out about the handheld system thing.

I think XBLA is our best chances of getting most of these games again.

I agree about not having any interest in the next gen(newest) console systems.  All the games play the same.
I like FPS, but I wait for a game to go under 20 bucks before buying it.

Those excuses are nice, but the reality is your old and life is more important.

Viewtiful Joe was a great platformer game released on the PS2 and Gamecube a few years ago.  If you never tried it, then I highly recommend picking up a copy.

There are plenty of old games to go around.  ;D Who cares about new games.

As to RPG's that are fun and exciting, try out Kingdom Hearts. I frikkin love that game - still haven't got around to part II yet.

Right now, I am playing Resident Evil 4 with the wife. That game is great.

RESIDENT EVIL 4.....wow!  Anyone who passed on this game, really missed out.  I love, both my classic and next gen games, but this game is something else.

It was on sale at Circuit City a few weeks ago for $10. I Pm'ed to Best Buy for mine.

I am simply amazed at the size of the game. I beat Resident Evil 2 in like 5 hours going straight thru. I just finished Chapter 4-4, and I have over 20 hours in it. I am playing it on a 13" tv, that is the only problem. If I was at my house, it would be on the projector and with surround sound. Man I want to try it out with the surround sound, then those ---daisies--- couldn't steak up behind me.  ;D

When I started playing FPS - it was very new and lots of fun. We played multi-player Doom as soon as we could. What helped make it really fun was we would get a bunch of friends together to LAN. Those days, we only had dial-up modems and those of us with an actual AOL account had the internet, but playing on the internet wasn't even a dream. It was Duke Nukem and Quake 2 - we did that for about 6 years.

Trying to play a FPS with a joystick is just awful. Mouse+Keyboard is really where it's at. Since we've played so many FPS and have been doing it for so long - most of us are done.

hmm.. what else... Oh!
I like RPGs... but... i wana play my RPGs not watch them...
Ah yes. I agree with you here. RPG's were more challenging back in the day too. I don't know if thats because I was younger or because the answer wasn't a google away, but I remember being stuck on Ultima III for weeks/months. Eventually I would figure it out and move on. When I played FF3 on SNES - it was pretty fun but easy. Going through the motions is all I did. No real challenge. Nowadays - it seems they build in busy work (like leveling your character, tedious tasks, etc.) so they can claim "200 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY!"

Is there anyone out there with similar tastes as me?  Am I forced to play old games forever?  Is there no one out there making games new platformers? Is the future all FPS?
Well.... this is what lead me back to Arcade games and MAME. I don't have the time, dexterity or motivation to learn the new games. Give me a joystick, a couple buttons and 30 minutes. I'm lucky to have about 5-10 game breaks in a week. 2.5-5 hours of gameplay a week doesn't really let you get into any of the latest games. I can quickly play a game of Galaga, Robotron or Defender and then get on with my life.

I get motion sickness from playing FPS, lol. Of the modern games I do like racing simulation games. I hardly ever buy games though.

If I play a game besides the classics then it would be Subspace Continuum. It's free, 2D and online.

If you are loving the retro then you need to get a wii.  Suprisingly, many of it's upcoming (and current) titles are 2d.  Metal Slug Anthology and Rampage Total Destruction come to mind.  Konami and Capcom seemed to have jumped on board as well, so I wouldn't be suprised if we see some castlevaina/megaman 2d goodness.  Wii Play's lineup, while simple is extremely retro.  Duckhunt, Combat and Pong?  I mean come on does it get any better than that?

On the other hand, you'll notice that the wii is suprisingly light on the fps'es.  I think this is a good thing as I refuse to buy another fps until they actually start innovating again.

Also mario, zelda and metroid are fantastic in their 3d incarnations.  If you don't think so then I can only assumed you never had a gamecube.

Oh did I menton that a 2d mario is coming to the wii?  Super Paper Mario is in the works and it looks to be a straight, old fashioned platformer this time.

I guess what I'm saying is you have nothing to complain about because if you look in the right place (Nintendo headquarters) then what you are looking for is already out there.

You really should consider picking up a DS.  It has an abundance of NEW games that fit exactly the type of game you like.  New Super Mario Bros. (totally back to side scrolling platformer), Castlevania (2 very good DS and several great GBA games as well), Metroid (went 3D on the newest DS but the GBA games were great 2d classic style), FF3(it's an remake of a Japanese FF that was never released stateside), Children of Mana (haven't had a chance to try this one yet, but looks good).

What Howard said about the Wii should hold up as well.

*Edit: Damn, I am an Nintendo Fanboy.

Oh ok, judge FPS games based on MULTIPLAYER, and with one fell swoop, dismiss them all.

I LOVE FPS games for the single-player experiences. A well made FPS puts you in the position of the protagonist, seeing things through their eyes. I like creeping around, and how some of the better FPS games take into account NOISE you make. Far Cry is an excellent worthy game. Half Life 2 as well. I've been told FEAR is great too.

I don't even bother playing online multiplayer, since they tend to turn into twitch-fests.

FPS's on consoles though, I'll agree suck. There's nothing worse than a thumb stick for aiming. Give me a mouse any day.
NO MORE!!

This is just getting old, nothing more.  There's a huge variety in game types and the way games play.  Monkey Ball, Zelda, Burnout, God of War, Virtua Tennis, Tiger Woods Golf, Wii Sports, Final Fantasy, Total War, Trauma Center, Cooking Mama, Gears of War, Ace Combat, Tekken, Warioware, Madden, Total War, Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid, Age of Empires, DDR, Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero, Viewtiful Joe, Katamari Damacy, The Sims, Viva La Pinata, Donky Konga, Twisted Metal, Ape Escape, Spore, Lego Star Wars, Samba De Amigo, SSX, Tony Hawk, Grand Theft Auto.  The gameplay in these games bares little to no resemblance to that of any other in the list.  And it just occurred to me that puzzle games are entirely unrepresented there.

There is at least as much variety in next-gen gameplay as there was twenty years ago.  In fact, the existance of an eight-way directional pad, plus analog sticks, plus analog triggers on todays gamepads, plus the advent of the Nintendo Wii, plus the keyboard/mouse combo probably makes for much MUCH more variety than exists in classic games.

Don't get me wrong.  Obviously I'm all about classic games.  I wouldn't be here if I wasn't.  But just as your parents never understood what made the Beatles or Stones or Metallica good, just as they never "got" the appeal of Pac-Man and Galaga, so you have a difficult time embracing new styles today.

I'm sorry guys, but ya'll are just gettin' old.

Nah we aren't getting old... the genre's are getting old.

The fps is dying on the vine just like the 2d fighter did back in the mid 90's.  Heck the 3d fighter is dying too. (I did NOT buy the latest MK game, that should tell you how bad it's getting.)  But getting back on topic, you'll see a re-occuring theme in the responses to this thread, namely fps are sucking.  There was a time when I couldn't get enough. I LOVED doom and I LOVED the early 3d fps like quake and unreal tournament.  But since then it's just been more of the same and unfortunately some consumers don't demand innovation like we do so they keep thowing 3 dozen fps's out there a week because joe frat boy or skippy the 14 year old boy is still buying them.

I agree that there is a ton of variety, but the bulk of the market is filled with shovelware atm.  You have to really look to find variety anymore.  That is of course, unless you own a wii or DS, or strangely enough, a ps2 (not 3).  :)

I just hit the Halo age over the past couple of months.  Maybe I haven't found the right games yet but most of them aren't gripping me.  Including Halo.

Nah, there was a golden age in the nes/snes days when the nintendo seal of quality meant something and the majority of games were good.  You must be from the atari generation, that was the system with the shovelware.

Just for the record mk still is the #2 fighting franchise of all time, second only to sf.  I mean sales records too.  Of course old coots don't appreciate a Kool thing when they see it.   ;D

Agreed. I never understood all the Halo hype.  Mind you it's a good fps which is rare as they are usually crap.  But you've gotta wonder, if people get so excited over a game that is merely ok then how far gone is the genre?

Its pretty funny how you say FPS games don't innovate yet Mortal Kombat is one of your favorite games.  If you honestly feel there is no innovation in FPS games, then I recommend you go pick up a copy of Half-Life 2 and compare it to quake or UT, you may notice a few differences.

Games are better today, by far, than they have ever been before.  Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is better than 99% of every game that ever came before it, and 100% of any game that came more than 10 years before it.  Nearly the same goes for Resident Evil 4, Super Mario 64, practically ever Zelda game ever released . . .

The issue here is that games evolve and people don't.  I work with people who HATE computers.  They have no use for them.  It pisses them off that their superiors expect them to make use of them and all the things like internet and email that go along with them.  Of course, these people are old 100% of the time, and the problem isn't that computers are useless, it's that these people are beyond the point in their lives when they want to learn new things.  Of course, this point doesn't just hit you one day like a ton of bricks.  It creeps up on you as you age.  You can't put a finger on the day when new things lost their appeal.

But it is happening to all of you who are complaining about the state of modern gaming.

The NINTENDO DS
is where to go for new
versions of old school sidescrollers.

Some have been mentioned here already.
One that was left out SONIC RUSH.
This is the redeemer of Sonic the hedgehog.

I love sidescrollers and most
all 2D style games. I don't tire of them.
I am old, yet I also play the new games.
Some I enjoy, some I don't.

 You are 0n crack.

Super Mario 64 is absolutly Crap compared to the 2d version.   As in 3d space, its too easy to
simply avoid thing by walking arround them.  In 2d its more challenging because you have
less option available..  and need to actually confront dangers.

The Graphics for the 3d mario stink too.  Horrid low detail generic.  Sickening.
Many 3d games share this sadness..  as using high quality art is too costly
in space and processing power.  Not to mention too costly because of all
the additional sides needed.   The 3d animations are usually inferior too...
with characters looking odd and having movments like epeleptic seizures.

Collision errors and Camera issues always abound too.
Ugg, and all the damn auto-camera pans at varried angles,
replays..etc..  just slow an already slow game down
even more.  Its pathetic.

I think most games are getting Worse and Worse.   Most games are so easy,
they take less than a day to complete.  There is rarely any replay value
either.

FPS's are boaring yawnfests.  They lack any real skills needed, and never
present any arenalin paced moments.  For a REAL challange, Robotron
delivers more furrious nonstop heart pumping action and challange than
all the FPS's together.

And for challenge, any 6 yrs old can easily play FPS games well.. but
have them try a 2d mario game.. and they will end up throwing the
controller thru a window after a few minutes of fusteration.  Heck,
even Asteroids deluxe is more challenging than almost Any game
thats new and out there today.

People who seem to like these 3d FPS games, have no real skill or
give up too easily.  Usually intellectual types who arnt too coordinated,
and want thier games to be easy 'walk-thru' like movies.

"Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is better than 99%"  LOL
How lame is that.  That game has just about No gamplay at all.
No intensity nor real challenge.   I can think of TONS of games
from the past that Kick its --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- to hell.   The only reason you
may be claiming this, is because you are thinking graphics
detail and free roaming ability.  Neither of these make a
good game, nor a better game.

A game of Spy Hunter takes more skill and has more intensity,
challenge, and probably even better cooperative enemy AI than
anything found in GTAsa.

"The issue here is that games evolve and people don't. "
BS.  There are plenty of Old people who use computers
by choice.    A REAL gamer chooses a game not based on
what year it was made..  but how fun, challenging
and sometimes how replayable it is.

Games are not always evolving.   In many
cases.. they are De-volving.

Many of us Older people have witnesses so many Great
games, movies and music..  that we have so much more
examples to compare it against.  We are now very tough
critics.. because weve seen and played it all.

Look at the movies for example.  Many sequals
Stink.  It has Nothing to do with technological advances.
And no matter how old you are... you can easily say
that you may think Aliens is far better a movie (IMOP) than
Alien.  And almost anyone (imop) can agree that anything
after either of those was horrendously awefull.   However,
heres the funny thing...   If a younger gen saw the later
movies.. and never saw the originals... they may have a
very different opinion.  Because they have less to
compare it against... or are comparing to inferior things.

Then, the new gen-r complains that 'ohh... your just old'.
No, its just that we are more experienced and knowlegable.

Many newbies are the ones who are jaded to anything from
the past.  As they cant get past the fact that someone from
thier gen didnt make it..  Or that the graphics dont cut
it for them.

One such person, I litterally forced him to play Two Tigers
with me.  At first, he was crying at how awefull the thing
looked.  Even durrring the first few minutes he wasnt
feeling it... yet, after he started to let go of the critisim..
and actually wasnt dying so often... he started to love it.
We then played to like level 10 one day..  which was insane.
Simularly, he had the same reaction to Robotron... first
scowling at it... then thinking..its 'ok'...  then loving it
and getting up to level 32.

And thats a guy whos 5yrs younger than me, whos played
and loves those FPS type games like Halflife, GTA etc..

I have been spending most of my limited gaming time lately playing DK Jungle Beat.  That's a fun game.  Not all that hard, though.

Me too, but I find myself playing it more than them.  Mostly because they only get 15 minutes a day gaming time IF they finish their dinner and IF they do their homework early enough.

Firstly, the only really good FPS is Duke Nukem 64. The graphics weren't the best, but the gameplay was. Keep in mind I am talking about 4 player mode here, all FPS's suck with 1 player IMO.

Lastly, Mario 64 was and still is one of the greatest games ever.

I think the point of this thread is that the fps are all the same.

The funny thing about what you just said is GTA San is just GTA Vice stealing ideas from the Battlefield series.

It's the same thing our parents said about PacMan and all the pick up dots running through a maze games.

We're older now, real life is more important than playing a GTA San level so much it's all muscle memory and you can solve it with your eyes closed.

The problem isn't that computers are useless, the problem is people working on computers are useless.

I wonder how many hours of BYOAC time I've billed to clients?

Have you tried Rainbow 6 Vegas?  It plays very similar to Gears.
Heh, that can't be further from the truth.

I beat Resident Evil 4 last night. Kick ass game for sure! As for replayability, it lets you keep all of your weapons, powerups, money and lets you start from the beginning again. I cleared what took me about 2 hours the first time in 15 minutes. Damn, that was satisfying. Now I feel obligated to play thru again. Only $910,000 more to get the unlimited Rocket Launcher. >:D

I'm not too crazy about the trend of online gaming.  Not that playing online is bad, but when only 1/3 of the experience is in single player (I think Cliffy said that as Co-Op and Deathmatch are the other 2/3 of the game), it lets down the people who aren't online.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I prefer to play multiplayer with my buddies right next to me.  That's how it always was in arcades, and thru all but the latest in consoles.

As to the games themselves, Old school was a lot more instantly accessible.  You don't have to practice for 20 minutes just to learn the basic controls to play Robotron or Tempest and have fun.  It's not that games today are less fun, but most are a lot less approachable.

That's the thing with the older games.  Easy to learn, hard to master.  Newer games, for me anyway, are hard to learn and easy to master.  As in once you finally master the control scheme, the control scheme itself was harder than the game turns out to be in the end.
