That's not a deal at al,l eb is still making money hand-over-fist on that one.  See suprisingly the ps2 (not the ps3, the ps2) sold very well this holiday season due to games like guitar hero 2 still being released to it.  They'll sell a system nobody wants and still make 75 bucks off of the "useless" ps2 you gave em all the while the consumer thinks they are making out like bandits.

Sorry EBGames, tricks are for kids.

Ya its a real ripoff   ::)   oh wait, no its not.  EBGames normally sells used ps2's for $100, they normally buy them for $50.  If you have a ps2 and were planning on getting a ps3, this is definately the way to go.  I'm not sure where you got the $75 that ebgames makes off of used ps2's, I'm guessing you just made it up.

*edit* Looking again at ebgames site, they sell new ps2's for $150, further confirming my "you made up your info" theory.

AtomSmasher, They sell the PS2 system for $100 and then they sell the extra controller and memory card for $19.99 each so it is like they are making a $40 dollar profit off of each ps2 system traded in this way.

GameStop is a pro at screwing the gamer looking to sell their stuff. The profit margin on used games/consoles many times higher than new games/consoles.  It's not uncommon to see them make 100% profit off of the sale of used games as opposed to 10% profit on on new stuff. I'm sure they've figured out a way to make money on this deal, too.

I don't think it is really the person selling their stuff to GameStop that gets screwed.  It is more the person buying the used products from them that is getting the raw end of the deal.  Checking the trade in values listed on their website vs. the selling prices listed for the games used they are makeing anywhere from 30-60% profit on their trade-ins.  But honestly where else are you going to sell you're used games?  If you check the prices on ebay in many cases the average selling prices for games is not much higher then what GameStop offers you in trade-in credit.  When you add in the ebay fees and the fact that you will probably have to list your auctions 3-4 times in order to get them to sell at a respectable price, it really makes tradeing in your stuff to GameStop look alot more reasonable.  But like I said it is really the people who are buying the used products from them that are getting the raw end of the deal because they could be buying their games on ebay for 30-60% less.  But it is a price alot of people are willing to pay in order to save them selves the hastle of creating an ebay account, haveing to deal with all the un-trustworthy scammers that are on the net, and haveing to wait for a game to be shipped to them that they are wanting to play imediatly.

Fair enough, but $100 for a ps2 with memory card and controller is still a better deal then you'll get elsewhere.   A quick check at ebay and that is commonly going for around $75, you might get lucky and sell it for $100, but from what I saw most don't.

EB Games and Gamestop are businesses, of course they are going to make a profit, but they are trying to move the ps3's so they are giving a much better deal then they usually do.  Also, you can get used kingdom hearts for free when you buy a used ps2 from them, which they normally sell for $17, which lowers their profit margin to $23.

Considering they usually make 100% profit of off used items (as Alan mentioned and as I said you normally get $50 credit for a ps2) this is not a bad deal and its definately not a trick or a scam.  If you want a ps3, then this is probably your best route.

I went to Gamestop this weekend and they had 5 PS3's stacked in a corner. I'm gonna buy them all and sell them for $2,000 each on eBay. Am I too late for this?  ;D

Do they come with Talledega Nights in the BlueRay version?  If so, I might be willing to invest with you.

There are three problems with that logic though.

#1 You think people wanting to get a ps3 want to get rid of their ps2.

Imho this isn't the case and it's a dumb move anyway.  The ps2 has about a year left in it with actual good games and that ps3 backwards compatability... well it kinda sucks, much like the 360 bc.

#2 You think the average person actually thinks something is worth less because it's old.  Mind you I think they are insaine, but most people think their 3 year old computer is worth 1000 bucks. Most people also think a ps2 is worth whatever they paid for it originally, when it isn't.

#3  You think people are never going to want their ps2 back so you don't account that into the figures.  When the ps3 flops people will be flocking back to the ps2 for a while, much like when the virtual boy took a nose dive and gameboy sales went up.  Actually the ps2 (not 3) was the best selling console of the holiday season, due to it's reduced price and the availability of new titles.

And regardless of this, you missed the whole point.  You aren't getting a deal because you aren't saving any money and more importantly they aren't losing any money.  They sell the ps2 for 100 bucks and they are giving you 100 bucks off.  Just because they only give you 50 for the thing when you do a trade in doesn't mean that is what it is worth to them.

#1 This deal is only for people who do want to get rid of their ps2.  I figured that was kind of obvious and didn't need noting since its quite clear you need to trade in your ps2 to get the deal.  Also, the PS3 backwards compatibility isn't too bad from what I read.  Back in Nov. they had all but 3% of ps2 games working, and they've released patches since then so now its less then 3% of ps2 games (couldn't find updated numbers)

#2 So its a bad deal because you think people are stupid?  I like your logic.  I agree there are a lot of stupid people, but what does this have anything to do with how good a deal is?

#3 The PS3 isn't going to flop no matter how hard you keep clicking your heels and wishing for it.  As of right now its not a very good system, but niether was the 360 when it first came out.  Give it a year and a number of great games will start to come out for it.  Sony isn't stupid, they've had the #1 console for the past 2 generation for a reason.  I don't think they're going to keep their #1 spot this time, but they're not going to let the system flop.

And regardless, you are getting a deal because your trading in a last generation system for credit on a new generation system without losing money on the trade in like you normally do.  Just because you hate the PS3 doesn't mean its worthless.

Sony released an update just yesterday or the day before that brings backwards compatibility up to nearly 100%.  Keep in mind that Sony's backwards compatibility strategy differs widely from Microsoft's.  They put the CPU/Rasterizer chip used in the slim version of the PS2 into the PS3.  They are not emulating a PS2, there is basically an actual PS2 built into the box.  They did the same thing with the PS2.  It had PS1 hardware built-into it for backwards compatibility.

So does this mean that the PS3 cannot play PS1 games?

It can play PS1 games just fine on that PS2 chip. Think of it as a chip inside a chip. There is a downside, though. There's no upconversion for PS2 or PS1 games.
