Screwed my USB hub installation. Can someone help?
« on: January 14, 2007, 10:43:55 am »
Hi everyone.
Not sure if this is the right place for this but I was hoping that you guys might be able to help me out.

I just bought a powered usb hub for my cabinet which I'm planning on using for my LCD Topguns.

When I first plugged it into the computer little did I know but the power adapter had popped out. The computer came up with an installation box for 'USB2.0 Device' which it couldn't find a driver for. I cancelled the installation and it came up with the standard 'installation did not complete, the device might not work properly' message.

I decided to try it on my laptop to see if it was a dodgy hub which was when I noticed it had come unplugged. I plugged it back in and into my laptop where it was instantly recognised as 'Generic USB2.0 Hub' and worked perfectly.

I then plugged it back into the arcade computer which proptly froze completely and had to be restarted from the switch on the MB.

This happens every time I plug the hub in now. I tried doing a system restore to yesterday but that didn't help at all.

Any ideas anyone? I'm stuck.  ???

If I plug it into the port on the front of the computer it won't freeze and will launch the same found new hardware wizard for 'USB 2.0 device'. Which of course doen't work. at least it oesn't freeze on this port. The front ports aren't USB 2.0 but I'm not sure I need them to be for the LCD Topgun.

I also forgot to mention that I'm running XP.

I have SP2 installed but haven't gone to windows update yet. I guess I should try that now. I was kind of avoiding it because I don't wan't that annoying little 'not genuine' windows notice.

I figure that the hub not being recognised as a generic hub has something to do with XP not being up to date.

The computer freezing when I plug it into the PCI USB 2.0 slots has me stumped though. :(

Ok. I never figured out what happened but its all working again.

I was at my wits end. Eventually I tried simply pulling the USB pci card out and moving it to another slot.
All of a sudden, everyones happy. ;D
The hub works, and is being recognised on all the usb ports, front as well.

Anyway, thanks for help,
a little quiet this morning but in the past.

and sorry for cluttering the board.
