clicking & black screen
« on: January 11, 2007, 06:53:09 pm »
I am hoping someone can help point me in the right direction with a monitor (?) problem I am having with a mame machine I am working on.

This is a Neo Geo cabinet that is actually in a very unique all fiber glass cabinet which looks cool but makes it tough to get at the back of the monitor without really disasembling everything.  It is a 25" monitor and according to previous owner is from 1989 and is 15KHz monitor.  I am hoping I get some suggestions without having to disasemble to look up the monitor type.  If possible!!!!

So the problem is that while installing windows, the arcade VGA card, and jpac the monitor was working but after I rebooted from installing another app the monitor began displaying sporatic horizontal lines, then went blank/black and now is making a CLICKING NOISE (like a pilot for grill). The noise is made when the monitor is off but regardless of whether or not the jpac/Avga card/computer are turned on.

Any help is greatly appreciated.......

HOT = Horizontal Output Transistor.

And you still didn't mention the make/model of your monitor.

Actually, HOT means Horizontal Output Transformer or as we commonly call it, the Flyback Transformer.

I hate the term HOT and I never use it myself since it causes confusion. I always write out the term horizontal output transistor in full to eliminate confusion.

Thanks Ken,
As for the Monitor make/model I sort of alluded to this in the first post but the cabinet is a solid piece of fiber glass except for the front where the monitor is installed and an access panel for the PCB etc. at the bottom.  So I was waiting for the weekend to (get help) lifting the monitor out of the cabinet since it looks heavy and in an awkward position to lift out.

I will continue to be reading up on monitors but does any have any pointers for removing the monitor.  Otherwise I will report back with the info!!!!

Sounds like you have a Sega Die Hard cabinet....... defineately a pain to work on the monitor if that's the case.

With that being said, it probably hasn't had much maintenance done to it.
I would recommend a capacitor kit and checking all the transistors in the power supply section. The voltage regulator comes to mind since it sounds as if it's going into a shutdown of sorts. Also checking for the usual bad solder joints on the chassis, flyback pins, input header pins, etc.

Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

The model number is a 25K2193 Wells Gartner monitor

After removing the monitor I noticed the the cap was unplugged and the ribbon cable between the board on the neck of the tube was only partially connected to the main monitor board beneath the monitor.

So my two questions are
#1 can I reconnect the cap without discharging (or killing myself)
#2 is there any reason why only 4 of the 12 pins would be connected between the two monitor boards (it wasn't exactly loose, it require a reasonable tug to remove it the rest of the way)

Thanks again for all your help!!!!!

That ribbon cable should definitely be connected all the way.

And you're saying the anode wire was completely off the tube?

Yes the Anode cap was disconnected on the rubber cap end off the tube, the wire attached to the cap was still attached to the board though.

Also the ribbon cable between the neck board and main monitor board was only partially connected.  The cable has four pins a space and then 8 more pins, only the four pin side was connected.  The 4 pins were bent to make this possible which is why I wondered how this was working just a week or so ago.......  When I get it all back together (this weekend I hope) I will leave an update if it works!

okay latest update,
Re-connected the anode cap and re-connected the ribbon cable between the neck board and the main monitor board.  did one more once over everything and powered it up with the same black screen and clicking noise.

This whole excercise did turn up the cause of the clicking noise, which I am embaressed to say was the marque lite or at least a power component for the light.  So now with the halogen light bulb removed I am now left with simply a black screen with no picture at all.  Turning the pots results in absolutely zero change at all on the screen.......

Well, now start going thru and checking stuff from the beginning.

1) are you sure the monitor is getting power?

2) check the fuses.

3) check your bridge and your horizontal output transistor.
