U3000 Troubleshooting(Help)
« on: January 09, 2007, 07:45:08 am »
This is my first post and the first thing I would like to state is this forum is amazing and has been an amazing help to a newbie try restore some arcades.

I recently purchased a NFL Blitz '99 Showcase.  It has a Wells-Gardner 33" U3000 with a Phillips CRT.  I was able to call Wells-Gardner and find out that info from the serial #WG 1307242.  Does anyone have any manuals or any info (resolution's)  and how I can tell if this is CGA, VGA, or EGA.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  I'm also have some issues with lines accros the screen, able to see some picture when I connected via a VGA card using the VGA to arcade guide.

Well after getting my VGA breakout cable all set up I'm having a few issues.  I posted some screen shots of my u3000's screen. http://alaskanfurhunter.com/monitor/5.jpg

Any suggestions before it heads to the local TV repair shop?

I can tell you it isn't broken.  You don't seem to have a 15KHz signal going to the monitor.  That's why the image is repeated several times.

It think this monitor is supposed to run at 25KHz, but I'm pretty new to the monitor part of the arcade.  I'm going from an olf PC ATI vga card.

Does your U3000 have the 15 pin connector like on the PC?

From what I understand those are VGA/SVGA.
But there may be different variations.

Excuse my newness, but would cause me not to have correct signal?

if it says its cga(15khz) then it will only take a cga signal so if you want to run a pc then you will need some sort of converter or an arcade vga card because pc's output 31khz vga,and a word of warning if you supply this monitor with the wrong frequency for too long you will damage the board
can you not test this with the nfl blitz board(which i thought were 25khz,could be wrong though)

i am no mame expert but i believe you can choose which frequency to output by jumpers and it will stay at that frequency no matter what you run.
best check ultimarc website,in fact it may be worth emailing them for more info-get the info direct from the experts

grant unless I missed it he does not have an arcadevga but an old ati card.

if this is the case sTiNkFiZzLe you woulb be best off downloading powerstrip and referring to the powerstrip write-up on this forum (or buying an arcadevga card from ultimarc)

I do plan on buying an arcadevga for sure.  But I didn't want to drop the $100 unless i knew for sure I have a working monitor.  So what everyone is basically saying the my VGA card is  outputting to high of a khz.  My question is , the arcadevga is always outputting 15khz at all times?  Does this include booting through bios screens and dos?  or just in mame?  Please excuse mu ignorance.  Trust you me I have been searching through forums for last 2 weeks.  And I'm prolly just not reading the answer I need.

AFAIK the AVGA outputs @ 15KHz at all times, yes.

You should be able to get your existing card to output this frequency easily enough.  ATI cards are good for that.

If you're using DOS, Mame already has arcade monitor frequencies built in (for standard res).  You'll have to specify '-monitor arcade' at the command line.

If you're using Windows, the program Powerstrip as mentioned above will put your card into this mode.

is it arcing from the top of the flyback to the frame?
it is possible (but rare) to be able to fix an arcing flyback by filling the hole with some kind of resin but to be perfectly honest i would get a new flyback

Yes, it was arcing from top of flyback to frame. yeah, i found  a whole new chassis board for $100.  Figured would be the best route.  Since i think i needed cap kit too.  Now i wont have to do caps and flyback.
