GC Linux or Trade in?
« on: January 05, 2007, 10:26:30 am »
OK, so now, like most of you, I have a Wii and a Gamecube. I am curious to see what you guys are doing with yours. Are you trading yours in? If so, about how much are you getting for it?

Or could I make it a thin client with GC Linux? Have any of you ever done this? Is it worth it?

Or is there anything else I can do with it? I know there is emulation for the GC, it was discussed recently. Maybe that?

Mod it.  Then it can do things the Wii can't.

I wouldn't make it a Linux box... not when old PCs can be had pretty much free without the hardware limitations of a Cube as a general purpose PC.

Will Nintendo keep selling the cube? I'm a bottom-feeder that is waiting for them to become near valueless and that's when I'll buy one and build a collection on the cheap (like I did with the Dreamcast).

Hmmm.... I guess I have the same question for the PS2 and Xbox. All three manufacturers continue to sell both generation consoles?

Sony has pledged support for the PS2 into 2008.  Publishers have games in the works for PS2 into that timeframe as well.  Microsoft doesn't seem to be holding on to the Xbox as much... it seems like it's going down the road of obsolescence a bit sooner.  Seems like most games down the pipe are kids games and throwaway ports.

Not sure what's going on with the GC honestly, haven't been keeping up with it.

The Dreamcast was an exception. When it went out, they were just trying to get them off the shelves as quickly as possible. Other console makers have the luxury of a scheduled time frame, and I don't think you'll be seeing any of those systems for $50. If you just want something cheap, the GameCube is already pretty cheap.

If they keep their stuff anything like Gamestop, expect to have to go through 3-4 return cycles to find one that works even passably well.  And that one that works will have a disabled Vietnam vet living in it.
