I have a version 1.50 PSP that isnt being used. Please Help
« on: December 31, 2006, 08:53:17 am »
I have a 1.5 psp that has only been used twice and that was to play the nes & snes emulator. I cant buy any new games for it because I dont want to update and loose the use of the emulators. I was talking to someone at bestbuy the other day and they said there was a way to have two firmwares is this true? Is there a good site for learning about this?
I don't know if you know this but I'm sort of a big deal. I own many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Your best bet that costs no money, is to update to dark alex's 3.02 OE-B firmware.  the psp-hacks site will have information on where to get it and how to install it.

If you REALLY want 2 bios's, google for the psp modchip (undiluted platinum)...not an easy install however, professional installation recommended and not a whole lot of advantage over the 3.02 OE-B firmware...

Its funny you mention not wanting to update 1.5 this way, because I went through the same thing. My PSP sat for two months unplayed, loaded with NES, Genesis and SNES ROMs.

I finally came to the conclusion that I wasn't playing it anyway and was missing out on new games.  I decided to just let it go, bought a new game and upgraded the firmware. After about 10 minutes of wondering if I did the right thing, I have never cared. I realized I don't have to have 20 year old games on me everyplace I go, and can still play the stuff via PC emulators.

It was liberating enough for me that I don't even care about the hacked firmwares or homebrew anymore. There are now plenty of decent games out for the PSP.

and now you can play all the homebrew AND the newest games.... so I still say its worth keeping your options open.

Upgrade to OE-B, you won't regret it.

This is awesome. I had no Idea what I was missing.
Do I need to do anything special to get my psp games to play or just make them into iso's with nero or alcahol ?

You mean PsOne games? Yeah, go grab popstation. Point it to a copy of Hot SHots Golf 2 you acquired(the for-PSP version), point it to your PS1 game rip, fling the produced eboot and the keys.bin from the HSG2 into a folder on your PSP and enjoy. Most stuff works, and what does work will almost always run full speed.

Be sure to change the folder name and SCUS serial on the games you are making for PSP or else the PSP will think all games are Hot Shots Golf and will not allow you to save your games.  The popstation GUI called PSX2PSP will do this very easily.  You can also change the icon and background for the games so it's not always using the Hot Shots Golf ones.

I can relate to TOK. I updated my 1.5 to 2.0 so that I could play GTA when it came out. I knew I could easily downgrade so I didn't worry. I had to install Fanjita's eboot loader to get my old emus working. It's always been buggy and it required me to tweak the emu configs to get it to work right. It crashed alot (I was running the old BOCK release). So while devhook looked interesting, I didn't (or couldn't) muster the energy to tussle with with it. In the end, I had UMD games I couldn't play and buggy emus. I missed the simplicity of 1.5 didn't have the ability to run PSPradio, alternate MP3 players, and other stuff like that.

Welp, this past Xmas season's excitement in the PSP community about Dark AleX's 3.02-OB firmware and PSX emulation got me going. So last night I downgraded to 1.5 and then installed 3.02-OA (followed immediately by OB). It's a simple process and the PSP is now fast as hell, totally reliable, and runs everything. No more crashing and no more buffer overflow pictures. All my UMDs work now, and so do all the 1.5 console emulators and applications. And now I'm playing the PSX Metal Slug X too! I get all three functions and have a better overall PSP in general. Feels way less like a hacked environment but still does everything -- faster and more graceful.

TOK, I think you woulda been happier in the long run if you upgraded to 3.02-OA instead of where you probably are now (2.71?). Then again, if you no longer want to run any homebrew and never will, I suppose it doesn't matter. And I think you'll get PSX emulation eventually anyway (3.03?). Can't wait to get r-type on there!

Question for you PSP firmware experts out there: what exactly is the downside to 3.02-OB? I know if I had used devhook I'd actually be running 1.5 but emulating 3.02 (or whatever). 3.02-OB seems to me like I'm actually running 3.02 but I retain the kernel access that 1.5 had so I get the benefit of both firmwares at the same time. Presumably you can leverage that same kernel access "feature" to go back to 1.5 or whatever if I wanted to? Do I have that right? i.e., there's no downside? Or have I gone down a road I can no longer return from?

You can always go back to 1.5 if you install the recovery folder.  The only documented downside I could find is no location free player.  Who uses that anyways.

You can always go back to 1.5 if you install the recovery folder.

Thanks. I guess I better check that! I don't remember it being part of the installation but I do believe that it's installed automatically. I haven't tried "R+BOOT" to see if the recovery menu is there.

So far my favorite feature of 3.02 is UMD autostart disable! Man was that annoying.

There really is no downside.  And 3.03A just made it even better :)

It installs very similarly to 3.02 OE-A did....take a look over at teh psp-hacks.com forum, they have some howto's.

No need to downgrade back to 1.5, you can update directly from 3.02 OE-B

There are also discussions there on how to convert your PS1 titles to the proper format for the PSP to use.

ok people AVOID THE "EASY" installer. I just bricked my psp but brought it backto life from recovery mode. I dunno if it was my configuration or whatever but it was bricked for good :o
