FORGET XBMC, WII OWNERS!
« on: December 23, 2006, 07:17:21 pm »
I have some links for those owners of the Wii console...all spotted on digg today by me.

First, the best of them all:
http://www.redkawa.com/mediacenters/wiimediacenterx/
It's a media center for Wii! Runs thru the browser!

Second (alternative to the first):
http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_Opera_Browser_Orb_Streaming_Works_Great
Same, but lacks the pretty interface and internal network speeds.

Finally:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_Browser_Alluc_org_Peekvid_com_Ultimate_Time_Waster
TV-on-Demand on the Wii!

Dunno about you, but I am absolutely wetting my pants right now. Now all we need is a DVD Channel and the Wii will become the center of entertainment in my house!

That media browser looks pretty strong, I'll have to try it out!
Reality is overrated.

As I said in the other thread, it was only a matter of time. I'm a bit surprised though that they got it out that quick. I would have expected at least a week between the browser and the tricks.

Red was the one who put out the video converter I was experimenting with earlier on.  I've not tried running it through the Wii yet, but probably will later this morning.

Red had the video converter up two - three weeks before the launch of the Wii.  I'm not surprised things have moved this quickly myself.

Not yet.  Still requires an app on the server - XBMC does not.  Wii doesn't support HD or 5.1 - XBMC does.  Wii can't upconvert to HD - XBMC does.

It's a good start but the Wii doesn't have the hardware for any of the best features of XBMC.

That's okay though, because I'm using my Wii on the CRT TV with non 5.1 sound. I have no HD content to stream, anyways. That's just me, though. You're correct in that many will continue to use XBMC because of those features.

It will be good for standard setups like that.  My main TV is nonHD, so if I pick up a Wii any time soon, I'll look into this.  I already have an XBMC setup to tap into.

It's a really great idea, but it's nothing that someone else here couldn't do with a bit of time. There are hardware limitations, but there's infinite customization oppotunities. Anyone with web design experience could pull it off.

I noticed they're making one for the PS3 as well. I think that one might be a bit more redundant, but at least the PS3 is more capable from a hardware standpoint.

Definitely a good starting point. It'll be better when we can run homebrew on the Wii, of course. Then we can just do it that way and get near-XBMC levels of functionality in a much smaller package.
