Asteroids help... "problem resolve"
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:57:21 pm »
hello everybody,

i  am looking on some help with my asteroids... i bought few months ago an asteroids cocktail table. It was parts missing..so i rebuild it slowly...

the pcb as been repair and 100% working
the audio board as new kap kit 100% working (+5 perfect)
the big blue is new
the monitor g05, the deflection board as a new kap kit but not the hight voltage.

this is the problem: when i turn on the game everything is working great, perfect graphics , game play sound ...

but after 45 minutes on, the graphics are getting bigger and you cant see the scores anymore, then it come back to normal and then big again...
when i open the cocktail, the monitor was making a weird noise, i couldnt say if it was coming from the tube itself or from the high voltage cage...

i turn it off, try this morning, it work perfect, but after 45 minutes same thing ...

any idea ? high voltage need to be recap ?

thanks for your help ....

I'd start by recapping the high voltage and going from there.

Be careful in there.  There's a reason it is in its own section.

When you say that graphics start getting big, are the lines of the vectors getting thicker and becomming blurry as well?  If so that would be a "blooming" issue and would likely be the HV diode.  Cap the HV section at the same time if it hasn't been done yet.

If the vectors lines remain the same thickness and remain sharp you may have a scaling issue on the game board. or another problem on the board. Are all the graphics/vectors growing in size, or just some elements?

Follow the anode lead that goes up to the picture tube...... you will find an insulating glob area on the lead......peel all this off......gently pull the lead apart..... inside will be the HV diode. Note the orientation of the striped end before pulling it completely out.

It is common to find these with the diode ends or the anode lead ends all crudded up.
The ends are like little "coils" and the connection to the actual lead ends is by compression. So the "blooming" effect can be caused due to a poor connection.
Most of the time this is all you need to do since it is not dead completely.

It's like a $15.00 diode through Bob Roberts if I remember correctly.
There is another replacement option, but I can't think of it at the moment.
(let ya know if I do)

Also capping the HV unit is a must if it hasn't been done.

There is another replacement option

www.arcadeshop.com

www.arcadechips.com

also stock these diodes.

thanks for that , i saw it last night, i am going to place an order...

one more thing, to discharge a monitor like that i read that the best thing is to use a high voltage probe... better compare to the screw driver and aligator cable ...

i found some on ebay ...

Awesome !!  Always good to hear the final success results.
Wonderful documentation and pictures of the Asteroids cocktail on your forum page.
I'm sure others can go and refer to the pictures and such.

Now.... I want to know more about that other tiny cab you have sitting there.
(Astro Fighter)
Is that some sort of Data East DECO Cassette mini?

I think that little DECO would be neat to make some plans from for building one.
Looks like it would be a cool universal cab for kids and or to sit down at.

That would make a sweet vertical cab.  The front measurement from floor to CP is missing/unreadable.  Could you repost that please?

Thanks

Thanks for the measurements ArcadeFever.  Does that 21" include the kickplate?  If I am reading  your diagram right the kickplate is 7".  If I were to add the two dimensions that would give me 28" from the floor to the top of the CP.  If the 21" is floor to CP then that seems a little low for a proper sit down cab.

Now that I look at the cab and your dimensions some more I see that the 21" is from the floor.  I'll probably just add 7" to the overall height of the cab so it is more comfortable to sit in front of.  Let me know what you think.

This cab will make a nice little sit down casino machine for my wife.  She really likes to play the slots.  Since there is casino software on the market I'll just purchase a few of these CDs and set up this little cab with casino style artwork and call it Teresa's Casino.

The only controls that I would need are a trackball (2.25") and buttons to run a mouse and maybe a 10-key numeric pad.  Then I could even put MAME on there with some trackball games.  ;D

I am glad that I have time until her birthday in August. I just have to find a way to keep it a secret from her until then. ;)
