Save State Failed Me!
« on: December 13, 2006, 09:44:51 am »
What the F?   My GALAGA hi-scores disappeared last night.   I have NOT changed versions of MAME.   The only thing I did was unplug the cabinet so I could remove the monitor chassis.   When I fired back up and went in to Galaga....hi-scores were GONE!   I have not changed versions since .108 because of this crap...and now it's happening even when I don't change versions.

What's a man gotta do to maintain a hi-score?  Sheesh...

You know if you unplug a real cabinet, the highscores are toasted too. And isn't this what the mame team is trying to move towards? 100% perfect emulation :-) in all seriousness tho this has also happend to me, fustrating to say the least :-(

Yah...it appears it only happened to Galaga...my Donkey Kong scores were still there...

No biggie...if they (the hiscores) were so important to me I would not ever screw around with my cabinet....that seems to be what causes these issues...me.

Thats why I won't use save states. Sure it's more accurate but High Score Saves on the cab is an important part of the fun, especially when friends come over.

Or when you've networked your nvram and hi directories so that all your friends are sharing high scores.

Joseph - very interesting statement.  :)  Are you sharing your hi scores outside your house lan?

Yes. There are 4 of us with Arcade Cabinets. We all share the same hi scores. I store the hi and nvram directories on an ftp server. (We have not yet upgraded to save state versions). Then I use webdrive on all the machines to mount the ftp server as if it were a physical drive. Everyone uses identical MAME revisions and ROMs and we all point our hi and nvram directories to the mounted server. It's quite speedy, unless you want to play Simpon's Bowling which has an NVRAM file which is around 8MB (which can take a noticeable number of seconds to load).

Nice idea.

Edit your mame.ini file; change the autosave parameter to 1:

# STATE/PLAYBACK OPTIONS
#
# state                   <NULL> (not set)
autosave                  1

Not even close, but someone implements save states on a few games on most of the u releases, so it will get done eventually.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

Using NOP's cool program rl (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=55636.0, I found 703 of 6344 roms marked as savestate=supported.  Excluding clones, there are 322 parents marked as savestate=supported.  That means that 5641 roms marked as notsupported....
