Blurry monitor, Flyback transformer?
« on: December 05, 2006, 07:48:02 pm »
This arcade monitor had a few problems, a cap kit (not 100% though) and reflowing most of the board has cured most of them. All that 's left is that the picture is rather blurry. Adjusting the contrast/brightness etc. control doesn't help.

The first thing of note is that the focus control on the flyback unit doesn't  do anything at all. (The brightness knob works though) at one point I pressed in on the focus knob like a button, and sort of push the flyback back and fourth. And it was cured! I had a nice sharp image and everything was A-Ok. For a little while. Then the picture gradually blurred up. After that the "wiggle the flyback" trick didn't work anymore.

Now, When I reflowed the board I also sucked up the solder off the flyback pins, and resoldered it with some nice fresh professional use solder. (I borrowed it from work ) So I doubt there are any issues with the joints, as the wiggle success would have one believe. So that leaves me with the idea that the flyback unit itself is defective, but I have no idea what to replace it with! Also, there is a 200µF 35V cap connected right to the flyback that I didn't get to change, I couldn't find another one. All I have is a 220µF 35+V cap.

I don't want to rule out anything else as I'm not to familliar with monitors, I've also read something about some wire on the neck socket being loose. Could there be some other thing I'm not considering here?

I'm not even sure what kind of monitor I have, Google wasn't much help identifying these numbers-

The tube has a lable, says -
ZENITH
G-A63ADG25X
04RC0105-005

Another sticker on the tube-
"FIX TUBE ser. no. WG509812"

The sticker on the chassis that shows a drawing of the board and lables the vert. hold, etc says "69X2084"

Another sticker on the chassis says-
MODEL NO. 25K7191
120V 60Hz 100W MAX
69X2010-100

And the board itself says-
85X0216-001E
W.G.E.C 1990

I take it that's a Wells Gardner board?   It also says "HSIANG KUO", but I'm pretty sure that's the PCB/Raw card manufacturer.

So.... what do you think, sirs?

You have a K7000 series from Wells Gardner.

Sounds like your flyback is ailing.

You can get new ones from many places.  Bob Roberts sells them.

Yup, I second Peale's diagnosis....   Sounds like the focus pot inside the flyback is shot.

Order one up!!

How do you know it's a K7000 board? The 25K7191 by itself? (Just curious) Don't want to order the wrong part... its' a 25' tube, by the way.  And I take it it would be futile to try and get into the flyback unit and mess with the focus pot....? (I'm not really cheap, just impatient. ;D)

The flyback I have now has TLF 09-04 written on it. Isn't that Panasonic?

The 7191 is the very same as the k7000 family and uses the exact same flyback. From what you have described, your flyback is definitely shot and must be replaced. Bob Roberts has the flyback as does arcadeshop.com and Zanen Electronics.
