360 hacked yet?
« on: November 30, 2006, 03:59:37 pm »
By "hacked" I mean to the extent that you can rip games to a larger HD you've installed, like on the original XBox. . .

I could google but this thread might be fun to read instead.  What??? :dunno

It's possible to stream video to the 360 from a pc running XP Media Center.  I've been thinking of setting up a dual boot on my MAME system.

As far as your actual question goes:  :dunno

I'm a big help, eh?

Heh.  Well, I have an original XBox with a 60GIG in it, softmodded.  Just wanna know if the 360 community has gotten this far with things yet.  I'd "upgrade" to the 360 but not if you can't load/rip games from/to the HD yet. . .

I don't think so.  As far as I know, flashing the DVDs firmware to allow it to read backup discs is as far as they've gotten on that front.

That's right.  You can play backups, which requires you to buy the still fairly expensive dual-layer DVD-R discs, but you can't play games from a hard drive.

They're only about $2-3 a disc, so they are definitely higher priced than a single layer disc, but I dunno that expensive is really the word. Especially considering the cost of the item being "backed up".  ;)

No, so far no larger hdd.  There's and encrypted sector on the hdd and apparently you can't just clone it.

There are firmware hacks but in a month of their release Microsoft has it taken care of.  They are doing the ol' cat and mouse routine.

As far as video you can stream music, pictures and video from MCE or wmp11.  Video needs to be in a specific wmv format.  Music can be mp3 or wma.  You can also read these from a usb drive.

My favorite part of my 360 is having my 1 gig jump drive full of mp3s and that play list is the background music.  Most games will cut their background music when you are playing your own.  Also it has direct control of my ipod too.

SirPoonga,

Perhaps you'll be interested in this program called Tversity.  It's a media server that does on-the-fly transcoding.  From what I understand, if you have this installed on your PC, you simply tell Tversity what you want to share, after which you can browse to your videos (including DivX and other formats) from your Xbox 360 and stream them as well.

And it's free.

This looks like an great little program for those of us that don't have Media Center.  I have tried it an I managed to see the list of vids on my laptop, but unfortunately couldn't play them.  I think I need to fiddle with the settings or try to read some of the threads on setups.

Yeah, I've seen TVersity.  However, to re-encode on the fly takes a powerful computer.

I use the re-encoding methods found here.

Fortunately, dual layer DVD burners are all over the place in the $25 range right now.

So, any updates on the 360 hacking scene - are we able to play games off a large HD yet?  I just got a 360 and would love to make it much like my regular XBox in that way. . .

I don't think you can play off a HD yet, but MS did recently start permanently banning modified 360's from xBox Live.  By that, I mean banning the specific console, not any particular live accounts...

there is a way to run homebrew and unsigned code, but you will need a virgin 1st gen (not elite either)console with no updates. the hypervisor exploit was patched ,but it is still a viable option if you got the pristine hardware.
the problem is that the console demands that the firmware match the title, for example a new game wont on an old system kernel. so while you may be able to run linux on a hypervisor capable 360, you would be limited to first string release titles.
Enjoying the fruits of technological obsolescence one game at a time...

Yes, it is an exploit.

Yes, you would be able to run homebrew

However, if you want to play actual legitimate 360 titles on that 360, you would be limited to pretty much only launch titles, because loading up any later titles would require you update to a later dashboard with the exploit fixed.

so do they have custom dash's all the emu's and such working?

the dash's emu's homemade games and apps are homebrew where if it cannot do any of them yet then it is an exploite only.
