Project Announcement: Sir Nick's Arcade
« on: December 25, 2006, 01:22:46 pm »

The idea for the theme of my first build came to me when I seen a huge 4' 8' sheet of Brushed metal in my uncle's garage. These go for around $200 bucks, my gamer tag in games is Sir Nick so I put those two together and came up with an idea for a castle theme. With a brushed metal control Panel top and sides. The stand of the CP will be seperate from the monitor but may attach to it in the future still working on design. I will probably do my stand and cabinet sides in Wood and have my buddy who is an artist (thank god) Paint me grey brick/stones for the sides making it fit into the theme and possible a Knight and other Mideval themes on it. The build starts TODAY 12/25/06

The CP will be first to knock out

1 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" plywood  - Free

1 4' x 8' sheet Brushed Metal - Free ( Yes they are the same measurement how ironic  )

4x Happ Supers

21 White Horz Push But

17 Black Horz Push But

1-4 Player Push But

Wiring Spool

Screws/Glues/Extras

(Still working on a T-molding or alternative)

Total Cost of Control Panel
$163.00

Sounds interesting. By the time you've finished that thing will be as heavy as a brick! I'm curious about the design and the kind of cabinet you'll put together.
So, put many, many pictures here. ;D

Someone check my math here, I'm counting 42 buttons on the CP?  Why do you need 42 buttons?  With that many buttons, will anyone even be able to tell you are using brushed metal?  Before making that first cut, please mock up the CP on cardboard.  I don't want to see any brushed metal harmed needlessly.

That said, I'll echo the "pictures, please" sentiment.

With a metal CP, how do you plan on labeling the controls?  I recently worked on a project with hand painted bricks/blocks.  It looked very rustic. Good luck with the build.

I didn't end up getting to make my 1st cut on christmas due to well.. christimas, However I will do it within the next day or so and post the pic..As far as the controls go..Eh Ya know I might do a 4 button setup for players 3 and 4, but I kinda wanted to leave all 4 controllers adaptable for 4 player N64 which was the concept of 7 buttons per station. I may Rethink this.. gotta look into it a bit more when its in front of my face. Also gonna have 4 buttons lined up at the top used for mame  commands..

As far as labeling controls. I haven't looked into this. I may leave it bare.. Depends on the feel I get when I look on it in person. I mean If someone comes over and doesn't know which way is up on the controller than they can go back the way they came. The buttons A-D will be White and Extra buttons will be black for 6 and 7 button games.

You could use external gamepads for players 3 and 4.

Nah I will probably leave at 7 buttons for all 4 players. This is also nice if you do not want to be right next to the person your playing against.

I would highly suggest you look into using gamepads for players 3 and 4 (and for 1 and 2 as well) for any N64 game. Console games are designed with the controllers in mind, especially Nintendo console games. Just a thought. You may want to bust out some of those N64 games and try them using a joy and buttons before saying no way to the controller idea.

You could always put 3 buttons for 3 and 4, and only use the controllers for console games if you want. It is your cab though and your decision. Whatever you decide, good luck man.
