Hantarex Polo snapping and showing only red
« on: December 28, 2006, 05:09:40 am »
About 7 or 8 months ago I picked up a cab with a bad monitor. After putting off getting the cap kit for a few weeks, the entire project got delayed and the cabinet has been sitting quietly in the corner since. Recently, I finally got around to ordering a cap kit from Bob Roberts.

After spending quite some time installing it, I'm happy to say that the monitor is at least doing something now (it didn't even power up before). However, it still doesn't work correctly. All I'm getting is the red channel. Also, after about ten seconds of being on, something starts to arc and the picture jumps (at which point I turn it off).

I'm fairly sure the problem isn't the video signal. I've sent the red output into the green and blue channels, and nothing shows up. I've also sent the green and blue outputs into the red channel, and I get their image (in red, of course). I've also tried connecting the green and blue properly, leaving off the red, and the screen remains blank.

After reading through many threads, I'm quite confused as to what the problem could be. It seems like every thread points to something different. I'm rather interested in hearing what people think.

Also, should I be worried that the cap kit I got didn't replace every single cap? It replaced most, yes, but there's still a handful of the old ones.

If anymore information is needed (or pictures), I'd be more than happy to oblige.

Thanks for the help.

You mention arcing - where is it arcing from?

All one color leads me to think of the red drive transistor on the neckboard gone bad.

peale is correct about watching to see where the arcing is coming from,if it comes from round the anode cap then possibly a good clean of the cap and tube will sort that out(unless of course the anode cap is split and then you would need to replace it),if the arcing comes from the flyback body itself then you will need to replace the flyback
three things will cause your colour problems, the red drive transistor like peale said being driven fully on thus smothering your other colours, the decoder i/c(lm309n) on the neck card gone faulty or very bad or broken tracks on the neck card

See if any arcing is taking place inside the neck of the tube.

I'm afraid that seems to be where it's coming from. It's rather hard to tell though, since I can't stick my head into it while running. But it sure looks like it's in the neck.

The red transistor being bad is pretty much what I was expecting (and hoping) would be said. I just wasn't sure if a bad transistor could kill the other colors even without an input.

Thanks again for the help.
