I can test it for you (I also do board level repairs as time allows),  but is it worth the shipping for you?

If nobody here has a Tempest and is in your area, try posting up on the newsgroup rec.games.video.arcade.collecting. (use google groups if you don't have a newsreader setup)  Chances are better there that somebody is in your area with a Tempest that you could try the board in to see if it works before you rack up shipping costs.

Still, if you would prefer to just send it out, PM me, I'll hook you up with the address.

Let me check on the shipping costs.  I see untested boards on ebay from time to time and it probably would be less to have it shipped back and forth to you.  I'll shoot you a PM once I've found out how much shipping will be. (hopefully not too much).

Anyone have any suggestions what I should use to ship the board?  Last thing I want is for it to get damaged.

Anti-static bag, and bubble wrap, put in a box, and should be good to go.

Damn, it has been that long hasn't it.

Well I'm finally going to have some space to work on this sucker.  Is there someone about still that could test my board for me? :)

Also, can anyone recommend how I would ship the board?  I tried to find a static bag that would fit but I'd have to special order an entire roll to get the correct size.

(Yeah, I know, sorry for the old post)

My thinking might be a bit out of whack here.

With the monitors getting rarer and rarer each year, what is the worth of testing a board and not having a monitor to go with it?

There is an eBay seller that can gather together smaller orders of static bags for a somewhat reasonable price. I think the largest he has is 12"x18"(?) and he can mix and match sizes and quantities if you wish. I had his email but I seem to have misplaced it. I'll see if I can find it.

I've got the whole cabinet actually.  Maybe I should have started a new post...I was fighting with the machine for a while and everyone ended up deciding that it's either the fault of the monitor or the board...

There was a company that made new color XY monitors.  If it turns out my board is working, then my next step will be to track them down and get one ordered.

If you could find that for me I would certainly appreciate it! :)

If that's the case, why so much effort to retain and maintain existing monitors? Are the new ones insanely expensive?

What about the power supply?

There was a company that made new color XY monitors.

I think you're mistaken. (but would be cool)
There has been some developement on new flybacks which is helping revive some otherwise scrap monitors.

If it turns out my board is working, then my next step will be to track them down and get one ordered.

Does your machine "blind" ?
Can you coin it up and hear the game running?
Does it do anything at all?
Does the neck glow on the monitor?
Can you hear any high voltage crackle coming from the monitor when you first turn it on?
Are any fuses blown on the deflection board of the monitor?

Those kinds of things to know would help narrow it down to a board or monitor problem.

Found 'em

Place is called Richardson Electronics www.rell.com
Look up part number 19VLUP22

Found from Game Archive
http://www.gamearchive.com/Video_Games/Manufacturers/Atari/monitor.html

They show the monitor as "on order" right now so let me know if you end up calling/ordering one.

The power supply does appear to be working...the lights for the coindoor come on and you can hear the sound amp humming.
I have tested all the voltages at the board itself, all are the correct values.
Machine does not play blind, I've gone through the troubleshooting process laid out in the service manual, double checked the dip switches and thrown the test switch inside the unit.

Neck does not appear to glow on the monitor, no noise at all from it...fuses are all in good shape.

Thanks for the questions.  I may have overlooked something really easy and I'll get a working Tempest :)

Aside from the power supply.... it sounds alot like an Asteroids Deluxe I fixed..... nothing worked. Game pcb AND the monitor were both bad.

I'll have to check out that link for the monitors, sounds interesting.

Wow, if I could buy a new vector monitor I'd consider building a Star Wars cab from scratch...

Kevin is absolutely correct.  It is just the picture tube.  Sorry to get anyones hopes up, you'd have to track down a chassis to build up a vector cabinet.
