thoughts on 'gears of war'?
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:47:07 am »
so, I dont have  a 360...yet!

was in the local mall yesterday, stopped by gamespot and noticed GOW.

WOW, very impressive game, awesome graphics and gameplay.

The first game Ive played on the 360 that felt very 'next gen'

Now, i want a 360 and GOW, and a couple of other 360 games...

PGR3 & Forza 2

sooo, any one bought the game, your thoughts on it?

I know IGN gave it a 9.4 or 9.6 or something.  Called it the 360's first killer app.

it's a ridiculously sweet game, and this is from a guy who hated both halos.

if you have a 720p or 1080i tv it looks unbelievable.

Last night 40 people were online on my friends list, they were all playing GoW.  I asked a couple of them about it.  They said single player is awesome.  Multiplayer is cool but it lacks in uniqueness.  Most of the modes are slight variations of each other.  Everyone has said co-op play is what the game is about.

It is definitely a tactical shooter.  Halo 2 is it not.  You need to use cover and strategy to get through the levels.

One of the guys I talked to also bought COD3.  He said it is much improved over COD2.  However, it's a shame it came out at the same time as GoW.  He only played 10 minutes of COD3 and popped GoW back in.  He told me that it isn't because COD3 is bad, it's just GoW is very good.

I see today people have been posting glitches in the game.  I figured the game wouldn't be perfect on launch, most games aren't these days.  But with as popular as it is becoming I would assume patches will be out quickly.

From now until early next year all I really want is GoW, Rainbow 6, possibly COD3, possibly NHL07 in a couple of month when it gets cheaper, and Forza 2.  Assassin's Creed looks cool too.

I am debating about getting GoW this weekend if it is available at Best Buy.  I have a triple points coupon only good for this weekend.  I want to let it go a little longer to see how long the hype lasts.  It does sound like a short single player experience.  But that coupon is only good this weekend and it would suck to have it go to waste, especially since it will push me enough points to get the next gift certificate.

You know I am really considering getting a 360 now.  I plan to get a Wii for christmas, and was going to eventually get a ps3 when the price went down.  Last gen I never owned an xbox because most of the game I played were exclusive to ps2, or atleast for a time frame. Now it looks like its not really going to matter.  Why spend 600 dollars on something like the ps3 when I can get a equal product for less.  I'm just turned off by sony this go round.

Is Gears of War exclusive to MS forever?  It's made by Epic, who if I"m not mistaken makes Unreal Tournament which I know is coming to PS3, so unless MS has signed some kind of special agreement I wouldn't be surprised if GoW makes it over to PS3 after six months or a year of exclusivity the same way Resident Evil 4 went to PS2 after exclusivity for Gamecube ran out.

The only games that have me really interested so far for PS3 are Metal Gear 4 and Resistence: Fall of Man, though I'm sure there will be a few others like a God of War sequel.  I've mentioned this before but one thing that really sells me on the PS3 over the 360 is the fact that I've never owned a PS2 so I missed out on Shadow of the Colossus and ICO and Guitar Hero and God of War and Bully.

I really shouldn't put so much emphasis on PS2, though, cos I know it'll be at least a couple years before I get a PS3.  Likely longer cos I'll be in law school then and presumably just escaping starvation.  So by the time I do get one I'm sure there will be so many great PS3 games out I just won't ever find the time to revisit any of the PS2 classics.

That's why I am going to ge ta PS2 after the PS3 launch.  I assume there will be dirt cheap ones on ebay since people will replace it with the PS3.

I was going to get the PS2 just for guitar hero, but hten they announced there will be a 360 GH2.  It will most likely use the power of live and the marketplace to have downloadable tracks.

If you look at either system there's only a few exclusive titles that are not like anything on the other system.  Most games are going to be on both platforms.

im a fan of the cover system in alot of the new 3rd person shooters have adopted..Both GoW and RS:Vegas appearto be similar in that fashion.
The Rainbow Six demo was the the first time for me ive played a console shooter and had the same sense of giddyiness i remember having the first time i played Goldeneye 64.

It's short, but it is good.  I is very beautiful.  Co-op is where the game shines.  Multiplayer is OK, single player is ok.  The co-op system rocks.  You can be playing single player then invite a friend in to play with you at anytime.

I think its ok...
its really a next gen Splatterhouse :)

its controlls are more Ghost Recon than Rainbow Six.
im partial to the A button thing. I much prefer the queeze left trigger to pull cover and use the stick to look over and around it. I find the use of the "A" button for pulling cover/running/diving unintuitive.
I love the music. i like how it crescendos with the action, and gives you an audio que of when you can basically let go of the trigger when an engagement ends as well.
i didnt find the weapons terrible inspiring. Mindy you ,The grenades are very satisfying, but i found the weapons themselves lacking balls. I didnt find the "cartoony" rifle to either sound or "feel" heavy and real.. After playing Rainbow six vegas , Gow lacks the  percussive element that made those weapons sound and feel so real. the majority of GOWs weapons sound downright wimpy in comaprison.
The hammer of dawn :banghead: , i think they had a great chance to do something way over the top and really fell short on scope and imagination. The hammer should have been something much more awegazing. Its not a very impressive weapons in presenation, either visually or audibly.

Gears controls are no way close to graw.  rainbow and graw are nearly the same, figures wince they are both tom clancy.

I think the hammer is pretty cool.  I love it when the bezerker glows because of it.

I don't like the fact that it is so short.  I am workign on beating it in Insane.  If i do that before Rainbow six comes out I will trade it in for rainbow.

Um... no 360, no plans to get one, so... The Gary Jules cover of Mad World is really awesome? Yeah, I'll go with that.

I'm playing on casual, I think I'm on level 3 I just finished a driving section.

I haven't play it on co-op yet, if anyone wants to play let me know, my gamer tag is RecycledPast360

GOW and Guitar Hero 2 out in the same week......there goes all my free time.

I've played this game in multiplayer every single night since it came out.  It freaking rocks.  It's all about strategy and team movements instead of run-n-gun like Halo 2.  It has also attracted more mature players so it's a less annoying group to play with.  Look me up online, my gamertag is:  Markrvp

I've mentioned this before but one thing that really sells me on the PS3 over the 360 is the fact that I've never owned a PS2 so I missed out on Shadow of the Colossus and ICO and Guitar Hero and God of War and Bully.

God of War, Guitar Hero, and Bully sequels will all be on the 360, with rockstar titles probably being released on the 360 before the ps3.  The only exclusive titles sony managed to hold onto are final fantasy (which might change) and metal gear (again, rumored to change).  So if you don't care for those two titles there is absolutely no reason to buy a ps3.

History has shown that when two similar consoles come out, the one that comes out first gets all the exclusive liscenses.  With that being said, this go around the more exotic titles will show up on the 360, not the ps3.

I truely feel sorry for sony, a bad launch (not that they didn't sell a lot at launch but their launch numbers were so low), high price tag and lack of exclusive deals have really killed them this go around.  They might catch up 3 or 4 years down the road , but right now they are the lame duck system.

There is a final fantasty on the 360, though I heard it was a poor port of the ps2 version.
Guitar Hero 2 is coming to 360.  I am excited about that since there will be down loadable content.  Rumor has it GH1 songs will be downloadable.

I just found about this, myself! Sweeeeeeet! I can take GH2 for PS2 off my Christmas list. I just got an xbox 360 and I'm trying to build a game library, but I'm pretty picky. So far I've just got Oblivion, COD2, and DOA4.

Back on topic... I put GoW on the my Christmas list. It's the only 360 game I asked for.

Lemme say it again

I use bees as a mf'n pen

If anyone wants to do some gears coop you can send me a FR.  That's the only reason I keep the game now, I have friends who just bought it and and to play.

If my friends list is full pm me here and will try to find room.

Gears of War is the most fun I have had playing a game since my first multiplayer game of Duke Nukem 3D.  Because of that game 3 of my friends have purchased Xbox 360's.
