Hooking up my Xbox to my wireless network - help??
« on: November 02, 2006, 08:43:48 am »
Have run into a snag trying to set up wireless with my Xbox.

This is the setup I'm attempting
http://www.usr.com/education/gaming/wirelessrtr-ethmod.asp

For my home router, I'm using a USRobotics 8054 wireless router
http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=8054

For a Wireless Access Point, I've got a US Robotics 2249.
http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=2249

I've discovered that USRobotics has less than useful user manuals,
and for that matter less than helpful support period.

I thought this would be as easy as plugging the WAP to the Xbox and
voila, as easy as plugging in a cable. But it's not, as I've read.

My problem is, I don't know what to set this up as.

I've read conflicting reports - one place suggests Bridge mode, the
USRobotics site suggests AP Client mode, and the USR support staff told
me first that I should just buy a different WAP and router, since this one is
slightly older, or that I should use Port Forwarding.   ???

I've tried setting this up in AP Client mode and bridge mode, but apparently
I'm doing something wrong. The AP seeme to be connected to the router
fine, but my Xbox won't get an IP no matter what I do.

I've confused myself to no end for a week trying to set this up.  :banghead:

Has anyone had any luck using a setup like this, and if so, could you impart
 some wisdom my way please??

Thanks!   :notworthy:

**Edit**  Updated links, sorry about that.

Your links don't work.

I used a linksys wireless bridge for my xbox in my arcade cabinet, couldn't be happier.  Set it up for DHCP (I think that's the default).

Here's an example, though not what I purchased.  Belkin Wireless Ethernet Bridge & Game Adapter, 802.11g

You're probably looking at buying a new wone for $75-100, but look around.  I'm sure ebay as them for cheaper.  A friend of mine upgraded his from an 802.11b to 802.11g so I got mine free.  =)

Best of luck.

You need a wireless bridge for the Xbox, not a wireless access point (unless the access point in question has the ability to double as a bridge, I suppose).  I haven't clicked any of your links, but I'd guess that's what your problem is.  If it's just a standard access point you will not be able to make it work.  Access points don't do that.

From what I've been able to glean myself, the WAP can work
as an AP, or a bridge.  Per USR's own website, on the first link
they show it hooked up.  The pictures are exactly what I have
and the bottom of the page lists both devices I have as being
usable for this.

But damned if anywhere on their website they show how to set it
up.  Or if they do, I'm overlooking it.

Meh.  If I have to I guess I'll just run 100ft of cable.

I mean, I'm no slouch, I can get this WAP working with my laptop
just fine, but I seem unable to find the magical combination that will
make the Xbox work.

Thanks for the suggestions though :)

Do you have any type of security?  Like mac filtering or wep/wpa?

As things stand now, yes.  Using 128 bit.

WAP is in Client AP mode.  Has the ESSID of the router.  Has an IP.
Has the same channel and WEP type/key as the router.

XBox, which is modded if that makes any difference, will not get an IP when
put into DHCP mode, if I try to put it into static mode, it will keep the IP
but still won't see the network, nor can I see it using FTP.

One thing I have yet to try, and it just might be the correct answer, is to try a crossover cable between the Xbox and the WAP.

The WAP should be set as a bridge.  The router should hav ea place to accept the mac of the a bridge client.

Bridging just makes the device look like a normal computer adaptor for the most part.
