dumpster diving at its best
« on: October 31, 2006, 04:35:41 pm »
In addition to the chrome plated socket set, orbital sander, and 3/8" power drill I found today, I also found a pair of what seem to be diamond earrings. At first, I thought that they would go great with that new pink blouse I just bought, but then the dollar signs started flashing. I'm taking them to a jeweler tomorrow to see if they're real. If they are, off to eBay. If not, a nice birthday present for mom.

Definitely interested in the appraisal.  Don't keep us in the dark when you get word!

Cause if they're real, we're gonna start the name-calling out of sheer jealousy! ;)

Sounds more like you got items that were taken in a burglary. If those diamonds are real, then there's a possibility they were tossed in the dumpster because the owner may have been -murdered- and thus you need to call the police.

Actually, what he may have done was intercept an employee theft.  That's a common method of internal theft in retail.

An employee takes a bunch of stuff from stock and puts it in the "take it to the dumpster" area.  Someone, maybe the same employee maybe not, later puts it in the dumpster.  After all, it's in with the trash.  Later on someone comes along, dives and "finds" the items, and takes them home.  Dumpster trespass is a much smaller crime than shoplifting and carries a much smaller risk.

Yup, internal theft was something I hadn't thought of, but that sounds pretty logical.

More than anything else, internal theft is why stores go hardcore on dumpster divers.

real diamond. approx vale $100. My mom wanted them, and since she is the one with the eBay account, I gave them to her. Damn. Nice find, though

$10 says the jeweler's actual words were "real diamond, I'll give you $100 for them".

I've never heard of dumpster trespass before.  I thought garbage was "public" and that's how PI's and the cops get some info?  Did they change this or is it different between dumpsters/garbage cans?

Dumpsters are not garbage.  They are closed containers on private property.  They are no different under the law in many places than storage sheds are, especially if they are inside an enclosure.

Garbage is usually defined as something like "placed out on the curb, alongside or contained in trashbags, on the trash collection day for that location".

Wasn't a dumpster. A garbage pile on side of road. Dumpster diving just sounds better than garbage picking, to me, anyway. Also found, in an antique looking gem covered jewelry box, what appears to be a diamond ring, a diamond necklace, and two gold bracelets, a fossil watch, many more earrings (none diamond looking), a silver looking braclet, various gold and silver chains, a gold and diamond ring of some sort (too small to be an earring, really don't want to think about where it might have came from). Again, going to take it all down to the jewelers at some point, again tell him that I'm not interested in selling, and ask if any of it is real. Probably isn't, but its free to check.

Now you're becoming hard to believe.  You found diamond earrings in a pile of crap on the sidewalk.

The relationship between Ashley and I is none of your business.  >:D

Anyway, I did find this "crap" in a pile of garbage, along with some weather beaten solid wood furniture (no value anymore, all warped to hell), an old boxspring, a few old TV,s, and a full socket set I snagged.

You've got to keep in mind, around here, they only pick up bulky waste 3 times a year. A lot of stuff can end up in a pile.

In addition, the house which the pile was outside of had renters. They moved out. Presumably, the landlord took any boxes and furnityre left and put it to the curb. Oddly, bulky pickup does not come around til January, so the trash will likely be sitting there for a while.

It all makes sense now that they probably do in fact only pick up the trash in New Jersey every 4 months.

My guess is that they are dollar store diamonds.  3 pair for 99 cents

I can't recall when I didn't see a woman throw herself around diamonds.  She would have thrown her husband away before the diamonds!
