Thanks.  For the record, it's the same pumpkin -- just two pictures of it :)

I probably should have dug more of the feet out so a little more light would show through, but my god look at the bottom of his stomach and you can see how thick that damned pumpkin was.  I was too lazy to bring it back in and work on it any more.

This year we let the kids design the jack-o-lanterns, but usually it is my domain.

Here is one of my favourite bunches from recent years.

Here you go.  The pic doesn't show the detail very well so I attached the photo of the stencil  The black areas get cut out, the grey areas get the skin scraped off.

we have one big tom who is indoor/outdoor and 3-5 feral outside cats, so maybe the squirrels are too used to them to feel threatened anymore....

Well, if the squirrels are still alive, the cats aren't really doing the job.  My cats used to pile squirrels up like firewood.

nope i guess not. but anyways, i'm not trying to kill the squirrels, just stop them from eating my pumpkins right away. i could easily put rat poison on them if i wanted to have dead squirrels all over my yard instead of pieces of pumpkin...

but thats not my goal, i'm hoping spraying soap or hairspray or some other non-toxic stuff will deter them for a few days before they start their feast. that would make me happy

A coyote won't scare a squirrel.  You have to go with something only a little bit bigger... and if you put something bigger than your cat you will scare your own cat.

A coyote won't scare a squirrel.  You have to go with something only a little bit bigger... and if you put something bigger than your cat you will scare your own cat.

Fox urine works just fine.  Squirrels were tearing out the bulbs in my mom's garden.  Spray the crap around once a week and no more problems.

I went to Gander Mountain to pick it up.  And ignored the "this is not to be used as an animal deterrent" sticker on the bottle.  Dunny why that's on there, but whatever :dunno

Trapping.  Also for directing animals in a certain direction for hunting.  I'm sure there's other reasons, but for all I know, the stuff is from a fox in heat and my mom is gonna have eleventy brazillion male foxes in her garden now :dunno

Figured I'd drag this thread up for this year instead of creating a new one.
Here is a rough pic of my pumpkin this year taken on my phone. I have much better pics of this one and the wife's at home that I will upload later.

I picked out the most difficult design in the book and I was really regretting it while transferring onto the pumpkin. Once I got into a groove though, it really wasn't that bad. It took between 2-3 hours to cut out.

What do you use to cut through a pumpkin with that much accuracy?  Just curious.

What do you use to cut through a pumpkin with that much accuracy?  Just curious.

There is a kit you can get at Target, Walmart, etc. It was like $4 and had a book full of designs and a few tools. The main tool is a small saw that is basically a fine toothed jigsaw blade mounted on a handle. It also has a little wheel tool that you use to transfer the design onto the pumpkin. I found that tool a pain to use, so I went and grabbed my wife's seam ripper tool and poked all the holes myself.

Then you just take your time with the saw, and keep the original layout handy to make sure you are cutting out the right pieces.

I bought one of those a couple years ago... the blade snapped out of the handle in about 60 seconds.  Maybe that one was cheaper or the pumpkin shell was thicker than the one you just did...

I have a friend that does pretty good BIG ones with a jigsaw.

I broke the big saw when cutting out the top. The wife had already bent the crap out of it when she cut her top out. The smaller detail saw seemed to be pretty durable.

I haven't done it yet, pumpkin is sitting on the counter right now.  I'm doing it a bit different this year, I think it will turn out cool.

How do you keep that thing fresh until Halloween?  Mine usually start withering in a day or two.

I highly doubt it will make it to halloween. I will do at least one more before then though. The guide says that if you put it in the fridge every once in a while, that it can increase the life of the pumpkin.
