Almost embarrised to ask this question......
« on: October 25, 2006, 11:02:09 pm »
What do you use for the artwork on a marquee?  Does everyone just use a vinyl graphic?  I have a light behind it like most others but I can not find this answer anywhere.  I cant find it in Saints book either, unless I missed it.  Please someone take 1 second to respond.  Thanks  :dunno

You'll hear it called waterfast backlit in the industry. mamemarquees.com is the place to go. Great service and quality. It's white on the back and colored on the front. Looks opaque, but it isn't. They throw a nice laminate on the front and you're set.

Atari had a number of games with marquees that did NOT light up. So a regular vinyl overlay is an option (same type as a CP overlay).
NO MORE!!

This is all great info.  Originally I thought people had used a heavier card stock or paper like movie posters using high end printing.  I thought about this too, but don't want to get nominated to Crapmame.  I would doubt that a vinyl graphic would light up much.  Is there a section that talks about all of this?  Couldn't find it in the newbie section or frequently asked.

I created my marquee in photoshop and had it printed at Kinkos for $15 a sq ft on backlit vinyl. I've been pleased with the results.

wow! didn't know the grammar police would be out.  I would have taken more time to plan out my simple 2 second questions.

Old School and Prepare to Qualify were both printed at Kinkos on Backlit Vinyl.

Taking a picture of a marquee lit up is damn near impossible. You'll have to trust me when I say they look good. They look as good as an arcade. Not sure how it'll look after a few years with a lamp running the whole time.

I've had marquees printed at mamemarquess.com and at Kinko's (backlit sign paper they called it).  Both were excellent.  Don't discount Kinko's just because it doesn't have "arcade" or "mame" in the name.

I myself used a clear sheet of plexi, put a solid color of vinyl over it, then using my vinyl cutter, cut out letters, graphics, etc, and put them over the first color.  I don't think it turned out to bad overall. I've got the equipment to do this, but if I didn't, I would have used one of the other 2 options that were mentioned previously.
