95-99 Eclipse Fun...
« on: October 20, 2006, 01:26:29 am »
My son who has become recent driver, picked up a 97 GS Eclipse against my strong suggestion not to and proceeded to drop the transmission in all of 2 days.

I'm in search mode to find him a running 5 speed tranmission to drop in to avoid the high price these rebuilt units seem to go for.

Search of local part yards (Dallas/Ft Worth Area) has not produced any fruit.

If perhaps someone here might have part resources for such an item at a reasonable rate would be interested in any help someone might be able to provide to locate one.

Of coruse, outside the area would require sellter to ship but frieght could still be reasonable and produce a cost savings depending on price.

Also, the car is missing the cargo area cover. If someone has this car and would be willing to trace the outline of same onto a big piece of paper I was thinkng I might be able to make him one out of hardboard and then cover it.

We will continue to search local salvege yards for same including the tranny  but if you have one please send PM.

I look forward to any and all replies.

Thx!

Steve

When I got my second car (a toyota corrolla), the guy also had a Pontiac Fiero 5 speed. My dad explicitly told the guy to hide the Fiero and not tell me about it before I got there. I sure hope you don't pay the kids insurance, especially if you let him walk all over you by buying a sports car against your wishes. That's what McDonalds is for if he wants to be Joe Cool Fast'n'Furious.

As to finding a tranny, check ebay. You should be able to get a pretty darn good deal, even with shipping.

Don't worry... if anyone considers a Fiero a sports car, let them get it.  They won't ever get over 65 without it catching on fire.   :laugh2:

put 200hp in a 1000 lb car and you are going places... and yes, I am well aware that fiero's are death traps. I had a friend who drove one. That car had the most unforgiving manual transmission I've ever seen.

You could put a 400hp motor in there... wouldn't matter if the electrical system overheats and burns itself into ash every 10000 miles.

I had 4 friends who bought those when they came out... they thought they were getting an awesome deal... damn those things were always dead.  I mean, constantly on the side of the road.  They went through alternators like beer cans.

I advised against the purchase of this specific car based on its questionable history combined with it being a high maintenance vehicle to begin with. I refused to put money into it but if he wanted to make the decision it was his to make.

2 days later he was due for a big "I told you so" but I didn't even have to go there....but I will do what I can to help him source parts. I will say he has taken it like a man, sold his XBOX and some other fav items that he acquired with his own hard earned cash in order to get funds together to get him back on the road.

Sometimes you have to let a kid burn his hand on the stove to learn that its hot to the touch. Its tuff when those you are trying to help choose not to listen but thats life.

As to how Fieros got brought in on this thread, thats really funny. I had one myself way back when, bought new. It was my first new car. Within a few years it developed a serious knock and ended up ditching it as at that time the son we are talking about came into this world and I had to have more than a 2 seater.

I think I have a line on a couple of options. If someone else has input, please do feel free to share.

A Fiero that weighs 1000 pounds would be a body, engine and one seat. Stock, the Fiero weighs about 2600 pounds. Its actually an overweight car for its size, which contributes to it being a slug.

Steve, was the Eclipse running when you got it? 90's Mitsu engines are notorious for leaky valve seals. Nothing to do with the trans, of course, but something to look at while you have the car apart.
