Daphne triggering XP Blue Screen???
« on: October 10, 2006, 02:59:22 pm »
Its been a while since I posted on here, but im building a new Windows XP based cab and wouldn't you know it - ive hit a problem.

Its a new build, based on an Abit Nforce motherboard with an Athlon processor and 512Mb of Crucial memory.

I have installed Windows XP (with SP2) on the system and added the most recent drivers for the various components.  It has never been connected to the internet.

So far mame and Zinc work fine.  Daphne however is giving me the finger.

The fact that it's blue screening is only apparent to me because i see the screen for less than half a second before it reboots the machine.  This occurs either right away, after a while in attract mode, or while im playing.
Windows then restarts telling me it has recovered from "a serious error".  The Daphne log file shows nothing out of the ordinary.  It shows the same entries that a successfully closed Daphne session would.

So ive got a question - is this a bug that anyone else has come across?
Im running the newest version 99.7 (September 24th, 2005) and this happens on all the games ive got installed - Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair 2, and Space Ace.

If its not a bug i spose it could be faulty memory.  I imagine Daphne uses up a lot more ram than a mame or Zinc session would, so it might find a problem they dont.

Does anyone have any advice or similar problems?

I'd be suspicious of your video card drivers too.

You can download memtest programs that will test your memory.

Check out Windows Event Viewer to see if there are any errors recorded there if you can't see the blue screen message.

I was having intermittent blue screens and last Sunday tracked it down to a bad stick of RAM.  I used this tester: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Not sure about your Daphne theory.  My machine BSOD's within three to five minutes running OpenOffice, then ran for twelve hours running Trainz TRS 2004 (memory intensive), then BSOD'd when I quit to the desktop.

Haven't had any problems since I pulled the bad stick out, but it's only been two days also.

Silver, Tiger-Heli: thanks for the response.

I had forgotten about Event Viewer so im going to check that out first.
I am leaning towards a bad stick of ram though, and as i have a dual channel setup i think im going to try with one then with the other.

I'll post back when ive tested them.

Tiger-Heli: I have downloaded the memory testing tool - looks very useful thanks for the link.

My system was too intermittent (worked for 15 hours, remember) to test with just removing sticks.

What I did (I have three sticks of ram):

Ran simple test with all memory installed - failed test 7.

Removed all but stick 1 - passed (in Dimm Slot 1).

Removed stick 1 and installed only Stick 2 in DIMM Slot 2 - passed.

Removed Stick 2 and installed only Stick 3 in DIMM Slot 3 - Failed.

Installed only Stick 3 in DIMM Slot 1 (to verify Stick 3 and not DIMM Slot 3 Failure) - Failed.

Installed Sticks 1 and 2 only and ran test - passed.

Actually, daphne doesn't use much ram at all.  The symptoms you are describing are a video card issue.  I surely hope you aren't tyring to use a pos integrated video card with daphne, cause it won't cut it.
