I think Shes Dead-Need replacement
« on: October 04, 2006, 04:41:47 pm »
My computer will not turn on except for the led around my power button.  what should i do?

Its an emachines T2792 and ive had it for about 3 years and then suddenly it turns off.  i turn it back on and it stays on then i turn it off.  I replaced the power supply with the one on sale from frys 400w ultra something and now it doesnt turn on.  it did smell funny when i removed the power supply.

i could replace the board but id like to know if there is anything i could do first.  i now know emachines are prone to death but this is ridiculous only three years and it stops working.  ill try and get some more info for those who can help but its hard since i can only use my colleges computers for internet now.

its a 845v chipset i think er heres the support page fixed link
right now its not working so ill update the link when its back up.

id really prefer being able to get it working again as is since i have invested in new ram and a vid card (pci) and i would like for these purchases to not be in vain.  otherwise if someone could recommend a good mobo cpu combo below 100 dollars thatd be good.

thanks.

What smelled funny? The power supply or the mobo.  If both the PS smell then they are probably fried.  Very strange that with the new PS it won't start up.  Can you confirm that the Fry's PS works correctly.  Take a good look around the board to see if there is any visible damage - if there was a smell then something may have melted and that would be a good indication the board is gone.  Any friends willing to help test the cpu in their machines.  Just throwing out ideas

i would disconnect every thing(including cards) and turn on with just motherboard connected,if it works then plug each component back in one by one until it stops working

It's a good idea to put a load on the 12V as well - hook up the hard drive too...

The power supply smelled funny.  ill have to find something in my room to test the new power supply with er my in progress mame cab will do i think.

ill also disconnect everything and see whats up.  i read somewhere that it could be the momentary switch used to power on that could be bad.  if nothing else works i can try that.

whats cap plague?  i looked on the board when i changed psus and i didnt see any visible damage.  ill check again.

thanks guys.  it feels really strange not having a computer, my computer theres a huge difference than the family one.

I tested the psu and it works so im really thinking its the mobo which also smells funny now.

so now im looking for replacements.  if anyone finds one with the following features let me know.  er mobo and cpu.

2.7ghz or higher
uses ddr ram
at least 2 pci slots
built in 10/100
integrated sound
at least 4 usb
and im thinking a pcie since agp is going to be phased out

i need something for gaming but something not ridiculously expensive.  maybe less than 200 dollars.

Cap plague = computer manufacturers around that time used only a couple of sources for things like capacitors. One of the main sources had issues with cheaply made caps that tend to go bad after a couple/few years-basically you can tell if you have the problem by looking closely at the caps on your board and seeing if any of them are buldging or leaking (the tops of them should be completely flat, anything else is wrong).

Hmm so then i would have to replace them which means desoldering right?

Does anyone have any opinions on a replacement board that can work with all my current parts.

I have ddr memory a 512 and a 256, 2 ata hds, a pci modem, and a pci graphics card.  i wont be needing a agp card for graphics so ill want to rock a pcie 16x and maybe a 1x for a tv tuner.  and anything that is 2.7 ghz or higher.

its funny i found a pent 4 805 that can be oc to 4ghz but it needs 200w.  not going to bother with it.

maybe this link

Yep.
I had a 3 year old mobo that was acting flakey, so took a look and EVERY cap on the whole board was bulging and or leaking. Bought a new mobo (which was cheap). For amusment, I practiced my soldering by replacing all the caps on the board (it was a long slow night at work) and to my surprise it worked perfectly - in fact the higher-rated caps I used seemed to allow for a slightly superior overclock too. It look hilarious as the only caps I had to hand were 3 times bigger than than the stock ones, so I had to leave longer legs on and bend them all over the place. Looked liked it was a scene from War of the Worlds or something....

i wouldnt mind trying to fix it if i didnt need it desparately.  im going to do what you did then and at least get a replacement.  is the one in my link above your post good?  i use 3ds max and play games like quake 4 for requirements refs.

i was thinking of something like a pent 4 with at least a 2.7ghz cpu.  and it has to be able to use my ddr ram not sure on speed as of now.

and i fixed the link for my first post.
