hey guys, my car stereo was stolen last night. I know i locked the car, but they somehow got in. Took my head unit, two amps, and subwoofer. I called the police, but they said there really isnt much they can do. they took part of my dash for fingerprints, and told me to check the local pawn shops to see if it turns up. I called my insurance company and I am meeting with a guy on thursday. a few years ago, i quit carrying retail CDs in my car, i only had CD-Rs with mp3s on them, so they didnt take them.
so, i need to get a new stereo. when i purchased my subwoofer, i bought two 12" Boston Acoustics competitor 1200s. the amp i had at the time only put out about 300w so i eventually took the second sub out until i could get a better amp. well, anyway, at least i still have the other sub. basically i need two amps and a head unit. I havent really looked at amps much yet, i basically need one that puts out around 500 to 600w rms x1 @4ohms.
and a 4channel that puts out around 50w/channel. to power my polk fronts and rears. Im sure i can find amps that suit my needs...I was using Jensen amps before..i would like something a little better than that this time around.
buy my big concern is a replacment head unit. I absolutly loved my old one, it was a JVC KD-SH707
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qbAbdq5Dyel/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=257KDSH707i cant buy those anymore though. I looked around online and at all of the local stores, but I cant seem to find a unit that I like.
i need 3 sets of preamp outputs
mp3 playback
i would like an aux input
remote control
7band eq would be nice
easy to read display (this is critical)
the one feature that made me choose my last one was that it had a motorized tilting faceplate. the faceplate would pop out and sit at one of 3 different angles, so you dont get a glare on the display. I loved that feature, but it doesnt appear as if too many units do that anymore.
i dont care how powerful the internal amplifier is, because i wont be using it.
I have had several JVC units in the past and i have had nothign but good experience with them, so I'm kinda leaning towards another JVC, but I am open to suggestions.
THe local high-end audio shop was pushing me towards an eclipse head unit, but i have never used them, and i didnt really like the way it looked.
my boss just bought a new head unit for in his wife's car. it is a JVC KD-G720, it is a lower-end unit but it has a really cool feature...a front USB port for connecting a flash drive full of mp3s. this is really cool.
so after looking around locally and not finding crap, i looked online at crutchfield and found these two:

3 sets of preamp outs
mp3 cd playback
front usb
nice display
the second one is a DVD player, it will play divx movies, DVDs, and dvds full of mp3s.
it has a front usb jack
3 sets of preamp out puts
display is not as nice (only one line of text, instead of two)
rear aux input
dual zone output. (send audio/video from dvd player to monitor/speakers in rear of car, while you listen to something else over the regular speakers.
the cd player i can get for about $179, dvd player for around $250.
the dvd player may sound stupid, since i cant watch it and drive at the same time. (and there is no screen). i have a 7" widescreen LCD monitor i got for my xbox a while back, with the help of a power inverter i can use that in the car. I look at it this way, my wife is pregnant, we are expecting our first child on Valentines day, i was thinking if i go with the dvd player, i can mount the screen on the back of the seat and our child can watch movies in the car (when they get a little older anyway)
plus if i can make mp3 dvds, i would only need a few disks to contain all of my music.
what would you guys do?
