Help!!!! can anyone suggest a replacement monitor.
« on: September 12, 2006, 10:06:48 am »
I need some help with monitors for my Sega royal ascot horse racing machine, I have TOEI monitors model TC-HV140G. within the last 2 months 5 of my monitors have gone dead...well no picture but a high pitch sqeal. all 5 have the same symptoms so i assume its just ageing caps or something. Can you suggest a repair kit or even a replacement monitor. Is  there any other monitor that can fit in place of these ones?

Bob Roberts has many Toei capkits. Certainly your monitors are indeed old enough to have bad capacitors.

I am based in India, so it makes things a little more complicated. Where is Bob Roberts based? How much do thes cap kits cost will they be able to ship to India? Gosh I go a lot of questions. Anyways what about some other monitor that i may be able to fit in place of the Toeis? Can ou suggest any make and model. Thanks.

you should be able to source those capacitors locally(change all the electrolitics)and btw have you proved its monitor and not signal input, sometimes a high pitched noise can be down to the signal input missing e.g psu or game board

I have checket the input signal. swaped a monitor from a sattelite next to the faulty machine and it works. Ill try changing the caps with local equivalents, lets see. Thanks.

Just another thought, is it possible to connect a normal LCD monitor in place of the Toei CRT ???  Is there any device or converter circuit that can change the horizontal scan frequency to a value that a PC monitor can display. Any opinions please?

some sort of cga to vga convertor i imagine, but why don't you get the toei chassis repaired, even if you had to send them to the u.k its gonna be cheaper than buying lcd,s and decoders.i think you should look at www.zax.com and www.jomac.com both in australia i think and both repair toei chassis, worth an email at least

Ill try these guys and see what it costs But seriously as far as cost is concerned I find it cheaper and easier to get the monitor replaced than repaired outside India cos the customs and legal system here is so slow that it will take me forever to get the chassis back. The TFT monitors on the other hand are available for about 200$ here with no issues about customs etc. All i need is the CGA to VGA converter. If that is available to me it can solve my problems instantly. So is there such a converter? and if there is, then can you suggest where i can get my hands on it. Thank you for you help.

after looking at the machine i can see what you want to do,first thing you need to do is find out the frequency of the game board output(its either 15k or 25k)-once you have established whether its 15k(cga) or 25k(ega) then you can contact companies to see if they have what you require,i have just spent 10mins looking and what i have found so far is that tft screens run at 60hz so they require a particular convertor;try these sites
www.converters.tv.com
www.highway.net.au
www.8liners.com
if you can't find the frequency info of your game board let me know and i can contact sega for you, otherwise you can email gaminibandara@sega.co.uk for the information
i guess each converter will be about 100 u.s  dollars and you will need one for each screen you fit.
there is a company that make upgrade kits for royal ascot to tft so the job can certainly be done-also i have seen a multi sync tft on the market, that would not require a converter
if i can help any further then please let me know

you say all 5 have the same fault, surely if you diagnose 1 then all should be the same-do something for me,turn up the brightness on one of the faulty monitors to see if you have a white line across the middle

Thanks mate. Im gonna try this converter from the highway people, I think thats what the Sega Upgrade kit comes with. That kit costs $714. This converter works out a hell lot cheaper. I dont even need to buy LCDs I can use the ordinary 14" PC CRT monitors. They costs like under $60 here. Even the LCDS shud cost me about $200 and no hassels with customs and freight. Thanks again.
