paypal
« on: September 28, 2006, 07:02:15 am »
Is paypal really safe ive been using my bros credit card for the past year and recently ran out of my unverified spending limit so they said i had to introduce my bank details to become verified and then i have the option to use bank card but can still carry on using credit card as usual.    So why the hell did i have to get my bros bank involved when im still going to use the credit card. My bro was paranoid about this but i told him not to worry but really im more freaked about it than him.     Please tell me that its a one in a billion chance anything bad could happen.

verifying your account is safe. You must have been spending a bunch with cc to get red flagged.

Paypal is safe, just watch out for all the bogus phishing emails you are likely to get. Just use common sense about it and you will be fine. Paypal says they will never ask you to provide any account information via e-mail. Also, never follow any links provided in any e-mails.

In direct contrast to this statement, while you verify your account, they will post 2 small deposits into your account, you have to get your statement and tell them the amounts to verify your account. It's no big deal but when I did it years ago, I seem to remember getting an e-mail with a link to login and enter this info.

I'd bet they have changed this procedure to reflect the new security policies.

Can you just carry on using your credit card for everything and never bother with the bank card using it just to verify only . Plus can you just use the credit card to sell things aswell.  You see i dont want to use the bank card for anything other than having to use for the verification process.

They only want to verify you are who you say you are. You can pay for stuff by any method they allow. Whatever you do though, do not let them upgrade your account from personal. Then you will pay a fee for every transaction.

Depends on how much you use the account, really, and you only have to pay fees on money received. To help balance that, you can get the PayPal Debit Mastercard (very handy, that) and you also collect ~5% interest on money in the account-which is actually quite a bit. I was at the bank yesterday and that's around the rate they offer on 12-18 month CDs these days.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.

I agree with this, unless you want to receive money.  You can only receive money with the lowest account via bank account.  If someone pays via credit card, you will not be able to get the money unless you upgrade.

Also, there is no automated way to degrade your account back to generic.  Back a few years ago, I had to send about a half-dozen emails to get my account back to basic (only to have to upgrade recently).  So, once you upgrade it, know that it will take some effort to degrade it again.  Unless they have something new that will let you degrade in an automated fashion (but I doubt it).
Reality is overrated.

They will let you downgrade one time, and that's it. I accidentally accepted a CC payment one time and had to do this, but they were very adamant that it can only be done one time.
