video card
« on: March 21, 2003, 03:24:55 pm »
This probably should have gone on the monitor/video forums, but here goes.  I have seen a few posts about component video (not composite) out to a tv.  For anybody that has this type of hook up, what video card are you using.  I have been looking at the Radeon 8500 with an adapter to convert to component.

Also I have seen some posts (maybe not all on this website though) about finding 25" TV's.  25" Samsung TXM2556 (25" wide, component only) and 27" Samsung TXL2767 (26" wide, component and S-video) and 24" Toshiba FST (26-3/8" wide, component and S-video) are three I have come across if anybody is having difficulty finding one.

Wouldn't be MUCH better looking if you just go buy youself an arcade monitor.

I paid only $272 including shiping for my k7400 model then get andy's vga arcade video card and you have the best(more arcade like) display possible..

All hassle free. !  :)

As for component, there was someone who actully had bad experience..anyone else remember that thread?

I will find out later then post and you can view the thread. ;)
$272 + $101 (ArcadeVGA) = $373, if you can get it for $272 shipped.  The list price from where you got your screen is $365 + shipping which puts you at about $500 for a 25" screen and Andy's card.  It all depends on your needs though.  My goal on this project changed from authenticity to utility.  My cab is going in a location that I could really use a TV.  I decided not to build a flashy cab, but will go with something wooden.  I would also like to use standard computer parts when possible.  A Radeon 8500 can serve many purposes, both inside this cab or later if I ever decide to change my cab to something else.  A TV can be used as a, well, TV.

I also have to admit that I had NEVER heard of being able to get a 25" arcade monitor for $270 shipped.  Unfortunately, my first comparisons came from Happ, so I thought an arcade monitor + ArcadeVGA would run me $600 and up for a dedicated screen, which I couldn't watch TV on and I couldn't ever pull out of my cab.

So here is my question of your statement.  _Would_ it be MUCH better looking on an arcade monitor?  I'm not saying TV+Component would rival an arcade monitor (I just don't know), but I was really impressed with all of the component pictures that I've seen so far.  I can't remember if Oscar had direct comparisons of Component to Arcade Monitor.

In response to the other people that have had problems, I am keeping my fingers crossed.  Yes, they had problems, but No, there shouldn't be any problems.  We are talking about using the video card, adapter, and TV EXACTLY as it was intended to be used.  I am using all Retail components directly from ATI.  LOL, we'll see how it goes.

PS.  The other thread is here TV: S-video vs. Component .  He was using a Sapphire "Powered by" Radeon 8500LE and a 27" JVC-AV27230.  Was that the right one?

So I am lyin?

Man why would I ever do that..

You want me to scan the invoice..? :(

Here is the total..$268 for the monitor with shiping+$5 ex for C.O.D charge.
That bring up the total of $272 shiped for well's k7400.

http://www.americangaminginc.com

I never knew about this company.
I called well's garnder and I was ready to pay atleast $350+shiping for a monitor and I wanted to order C.O.D.

So I call wells garder and they told me to call american gaming and order COD from there..they are around my area too so shiping wasnt much.

Now here are the problems...it doesnt come with the PIN to go in the pinout and no AC cord.

call em and see if they have em for that kind of price..IF anyone actually wants to order a monitor..

AND ! if this doesnt look good for $272 then too bad. :P

PS:Okay too much typing..my hands hurt :-[

why buy a new Arcade Monitor ?

the cheapest and easyist option is to buy a used monitor you should be able to get a hardly used 5 year old monitor in perfect nick for under $70.

ur Radeon 8500 should be able to drive an arcade monitor alreadly (my old 64mb radeon vivo does)
at 640x288 or 736x288
but you will need to use hw/s but only in  mame. not in zinc or pj64

using mame 32 plus gives u a beter hw/s than standard mame.
you can still then buy an arcade vga at a later date  if you want 2.
but you might as well use you 8500 since you have 1.
8500+ arcade monitor will give u a much beter pic than using the tv (100 times beter)

lol, 100 times better?  The picture on the TV must be really bad!  Thanks for the input, a used monitor would be a good idea.  Any suggestions on where I can get a 25" arcade monitor for under $70 would be greatly appreciated.  I don't think you can make any assumptions about how much a used monitor has been used.  If a monitor was used 12 hours on and 12 hours off in an arcade, or 24 hours on in a bowling alley, then 5 years might be a pretty old monitor.  At $70, who cares?  I could buy two and have a backup.  You do have to admit that there is some work that needs to be done to take a used arcade monitor and connect it to your computer.  I guess I am scared away a little by not knowing what I am looking for, and not knowing what to do with it when I find it.  I understand computers, video cards, at TVs, so that is what attracted me to this solution.  Dare I ask if anyone has Arcade Monitor to Component+TV comparison pictures?

Snake, we all know you lie, but that isn't what I was saying.  I was admitting that my poor research led me to beleive that I would be spending hundreds of dollars more for an arcade monitor solution.  My first price comparisons came from Happ, which discouraged me right away from looking into it further.

<edit>Just kidding about the lying...</edit>

since the "j-pac" came out the whole mame cab thing, really has become easy.
despite a lot of conflicting views
you reallly can buy a used arcade cab and have it working in a few hours......job done.

its far easyer to get a cab with the monitor already in it for your first project that way al you ned is a jpac.
it also gives you a beter understaning of how everything is conected .

plus you get ,buttons,j-sticks,coin door, speakers, marque, lights, monitor all included.
then if you want make your dream cab with new buttons etc.... at a later date you still can
there is no way you can build a cab as cheaply as you can buy a used one!

ive ,about 6 arcade monitors at the moment in various cabs,
im not sure about the US but in the UK finding a cab or a arcade monitor isnt that hard.
i have brought a few off a guy who clears old arcades .
and most arcade opperators will sell u a used monitor.
if the monitor is still in the cab there is normally a coin counter which says how many times its been played.
u can somtimes find games that have hardly been used ,
if you think how often your tv is on a 5 year old industrial arcade monitor still has a fair bit off life left in it.
try to steer clear of any too old ,I brought a Super Chase arcade cab and  8 year old 25" montor in it for $30.
and a street fighter 3 cab with a mint 25" monitor for $130,
so there are good value compared with new ones.
what u got to remeber is that standard res arcade monitors are almost obsolete in arcades these days and most arcade monitors just get thrown  away  .ive met many arcade owners who have told me the amount of machines and monitors they have thown in the skip over the years(one even told me he chopped up a dozen space invaders cabinets with an axe), so theres no real need to buy a new one for your first cab you make , and like you said you can always buy a few.

you dont really need to see the photos there is just no way u can compare non RGB signal to an true RGB one.

For now I still plan on using a TV.  I want to be able to use it for a variety of things.  (would without a doubt use an arcade monitor if I was doing strictly an arcade cabinet).  The price difference between the TV's with s-video only and one that had s-video and component wasn't a lot.  If I get one with both connections then I could see which one worked better.  I'll post an updated whenever I get it installed (a ways to go yet).
