How many use scanlines in MAME?
« on: September 27, 2006, 06:29:05 am »

Hey!

I was wondering how many of you are using scanlines and other FX
in MAME? And at what setting?

Thanks,

Nicholas

Not me - I even run Mame on a pc monitor! I prefer sharper graphics over authenticity...

I totally agree.
I run my cabinet with a TV so don't need any of those effects. The low resolution smoothes it all out nicely whilst retaining the brightness and definition.

Even on a monitor I would say no effects looks better. Although, on certain emulators the engines can make the graphics look nicer, such as te SAI engine in ZSNES etc.

Agreed.  Btw Aaron pretty much agrees with this as well.  Scanlines aren't exactly in mame anymore (although you can fake it with a custom overlay sent through the effect flag).

It's the old addage of "you can't polish a turd."  Most arcade games had really low resolution.  All effects are going to do is basically blurr the image.  The edges will get smoother but you will also loose detail.

*shrug* I like lipstick on my pig I guess ;)

I used to like the cheezy old mame skip a line with black faux scanline effect.

Been meaning to try out the new arpeture (spelling) effects, but haven't gotten around to it.

Yeah, but you can tighten the loose detail with a detail wrench.

Scanlines=yes
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Rampy?  <rubs eyes>  Is it really you?  Nice to see you again!

I was wondering the other day (during the scan line debate) why they don't just use an overlay channel to act like a coarse dot pitch monitor.  It seems to me that an approach like that could work, but would require a fast video card and tons of resolution.  What's the deal with the "aperture" effects?  Along the same lines?

Hi Randy!  It's really me.  Been busy with real life and running my knock off BYO community BYOPVR  I still love my keywiz max, BTW!

I don't know the details, and don't seem to be able to invoke the new effects properly for some reason, to see the results *sigh*  It keeps saying "unable to load blahblah.png" and i'm reasonably sure the path is correct.  You go away for a little bit and it's like starting over on the software front... as far as command line options and front end configuration.
