Crap... what do I do?
« on: September 26, 2006, 05:30:02 am »
The C:\$MFT file or directory is corrupt or unreadable.

I run CHKDSK like it says, but it never finds any problems.   :banghead:

Maybe it's just me, but I think we need a bit more info.

$MFT is the Master File Table for the NTFS file system.  This is not a good thing for you unfortunately.  If CHKDSK is unable to repair it, the problem is only going to get worse.  It will write temp files all over your drive and eventually destroy data.

First thing first:  Save any data you can off the drive.  I'm unsure if this error lets you fully boot, but if it does, dump your data to something... anything.  If not, use a bootable CD like BartPE or a linux distro that can read your data and move it somewhere safe.

You can try to use the repair function on your XP disc, but I haven't read of many success stories doing that.  The only answer I've ever seen that truly "fixes" the problem is a full reinstall of XP... which is obviously a PITA.

Sorry.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

Yeah... that's what I was afraid of.  This happened right after I installed IE 7.

Oh well... time to backup...

Try using the recovery console, it's a tool on your install cd. Just boot from the cd. (It will depend if you were running XP or 2K exactly how you get into it)

Anyway, once in, you'll get a command prompt, then run chkdsk with the /p option. If it finds any errors run it again. I normally have to do it about 3 times.

If this dosent fix things for you I'm at a loss.
Good luck!
